A Round Texel (the biggest sport cat race in the world -around 600 boats) with a good breeze. The race is 100 km long, 54 NM, and the winner has a time typically around 3h15, giving a mean speed of about 17 knots.
The video shows the capabilities of a good cat in a fairly strong breeze.

    Great collection.
The Tornado clip brought back great memories, even if it was a "classic" style and completely worn out - as a student it was the best rush I had.

How does the Tornado compare to modern cats? Is there a rating system available that would show the performance difference?

    Thanks

Like all 20 feet cats the Tornado does not save its rating in front of the Formule 18, but in absolute it remains pretty fast. A formule 18 has a rating of 100, a Tornado something like 88 if it has a spi (a Nacra 20 is 85). A Tornado is a able to make the Round Texel 54 NM in around 3 hours, like the other 20.
Our very customized Tornado for fast coastal cruising was able in a good 20 knots breeze to maintain a solid 18 knots on long distances with attention but in the relax mode easily 15 knots, in light winds 8 to 10 knots, and it moves even if the wind is very light. That very interesting for coastal cruising sailing, you do not stay scotched on the water. Those speeds ask good sails, good hardware and people who know how to use all that...
The upwind was very good an fast but wet, the reaching was absolutely fabulous with the gennaker. With its wings (like an Hobie 18) and 2 trapezes the stability was phenomenal, but also very comfortable simply seated on the wings with a good view and above the splashes of water. The Tornado can stand some overweight, thus you can take equipment.
