"It is from their foes, not with friends, that cities learn the lesson of building high walls." -- Aristophanes

"With friends like these who needs enemies?" -- virtually any medieval ruler could have said it

Interesting rolling bridge in front of the lock at Saint-Malo pulling back, as the ship I was on, was leaving the inner harbor.

They also have an ebb tide swimming pool with dive towers, note the double stairs to them from the bottom on the sea side . . .

    Quite a speaker that guy . . :)

‘‘ Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever. ’’

‘‘ Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine, so that I may wet my mind and say something clever. ’’

I see you didn't have time for swimming, busy with the foes, I see the Fort of Petit Bé to the right, so I'm afraid you're aiming at the Fort of Île Harbour, which doesn't belong to Saint-Malo, but it belongs to the neighbouring town of Dinard . . - (first two are French links)

    Re post #8460:

Fascinating paintings thanks :), here's the posted one in large format, but I wonder if in that bad weather there was enough light to shine through the waves.

Maybe Ivan took the artistic license to improve reality a bit, like as he looks younger on his 1874 self portrait than on the 1870 photo.

You're welcome, Angel - thanks for your appreciation and research. Yes, they're definitely a bit over the top romantic, and he seems to be pretty focussed on one theme, but so beautifully captured. And yes - the photo and self portrait - but sideburns to die for! Definitely a proto-hipster!

Pinterest says... ‘‘ Miss Wahoo vintage hydroplanereply: This isn't the Wahoo. Destroyed at the 66 Presidents Cup as the Miss Budweiser. This is actually the 2nd Tahoe Miss from 1963. Retired from racing in 1977, and currently is in storage 2019, in this condition. A much larger boat than Wahoo. ’’

The world needs rich people to preserve these gems and keep them at sea.

Cats do like small spaces. But I wonder how it got in there.
