Compared with my original idea ,I agree. I would have thought they'd allow move vertical lift-we'll see as it develops...

There have already been attempts at foil assist in the Sydney to Hobart race, so far they have not been successful. Why do you think they will "add a whole new dimension" when they haven't so far? Quite the opposite, lifting foils have been pretty much abandoned.

You continue to make claims with zero evidence.

What about the races they didn't win with the foil? And the two they've won since without the foil? How did that happen if their performance in 2013 can be attributed primarily to the foil?

    Given:
    1. The original DSS foil was replaced by their own custom foil to improve performance
    2. The second foil was removed some years ago because it didn't deliver sufficient performance improvements
    3. The only other notable boat with a horizontal foil, CQS, has vanished into oblivion (its Facebook page hasn't been up dated in over a year)
    4. No one else has fitted lifting foils (which is likely the most significant indicator of their usefulness)
any reasonable person would come to the conclusion that in regard to the Sydney to Hobart at least, and Wild Oats XI in particular, lifting foils have been an irrelevance.

What nonsense! Foiling boats will one day dominate the Sydney-Hobart.............Unless the Anti-Foilers manage to legislate them out.......

Well said, Fred. The last I saw of CQS she was third last in class on IRC in the Fastnet and had been easily beaten over the line by a much smaller boat with no lifting foils.

The whole idea that lifting foils and Open 60s are not allowed in the Hobart at the moment is silly. Many of us who have ocean raced - and Doug apparently has never done so despite his inference that he is an expert in the field - have sailed Hobart-racing Open 60s and did it years ago. There is nothing to stop Opens and lifting foils in the race at the moment.

The Infiniti yachts PR guy apparently lives in some parallel universe, where time does not exist and past tense, current tense and future tense are all merged. The PR blurbs keep on coming up with incorrect statements, such as saying that the 50+ footer "is" faster and the 100+ "is" lighter. The boats don't actually exist. To say that non-existent objects that may exist in the future have certain unproven assets in the present is just pure and simple hyping BS.

Back on topic of foiling assist, I was talking to one of the world's best foil-assist sailors the other day. He loves the boat but is getting a seahugger as well because they are better for club racing. Such stories are ignored by the foiling fake news hypesters.

Rational discussion requires a little more than just saying "you're wrong".

You'd like that, then you could make all the claims you like and not have to face the reality that no one else thinks foils are worth it in any classification of the Sydney to Hobart. The multitude of owners likely made that decision on balance after considering a range of factors, not just speed on a particular point of sail.

…you repost an old article. A 5 year old media release about a foil that is not longer fitted to the boat (and considering the boat has since won 2 more Hobarts and finished first in another without the foil) really doesn't offer much support for your assertion. Endless repetition is not a rational way to approach a discussion.

I'd love to see a foiling IMOCA 60 in the Sydney to Hobart. If they get a moderate NE for the whole race they may put the record out of the reach of non–foilers for a long time. But I also suspect that in any other breeze, they will be back in the fleet looking for a handicap win. So in that context, anyone wanting to enter a foiler really needs to plan on doing at least 3 and probably 5 Hobarts to have a reasonable chance of winning.

May be one of the coming years with Charal Imoca's foiler ? Jérémie Beyou was on board Teasing Machine when they won the SH 2015 in IRC 3 Class. He was also on the crew list for the last 2018 race but being fully busy by training sailings with its new Charal , he could not join at the last minute. But he then said that he would love to do a SH with Charal one year if he could solve the date and logistic issues.

I'd like to see Charal do the SH, particularly, if she sailed with temporary rudder t-foils.....full flying rather than foil assist.
