Impressed to see these large monohulls achieve such high speed. They're up on the foils and completely out of the water. That is impressive.

 

That's only the concept.

Mechanical engineering has a lot of problems to solve before the 75 footers will really be foiling.
Like constuction of the Foil-arm and the energy to get these gaint foils moving up and down in a tacking duel.
Guess we will see tacking reduced to a minimum.

 

Yes I was referring to the smaller AC 36 (FF to ~2:20 on this video). In theory they should be able to scale that up for a larger hull. It's not like we're sending someone to Mars.

I was reading a news item about the foil mechanism a few days ago and it seemed to state that they will all be supplied by a common source.

 

With a common hull spec it makes sense to have a common foil spec to ensure equal competition. It also allows them to iron out problems in a common way for the fleet. Very anxious to see the new boats hit the water. Looking at the placement of the foil actuator it's above the waterline. That good as it could potentially allow for racing hulls like this around the world. e.g.

• Deploy the foils when wind conditions are correct.
• Retract them and rely on the base hull during rough conditions.
• If you hit an obstacle and damage a foil, just unbolt the foil arm from the actuator and remove it. Insert temporary panel over foil arm box to prevent ingress of water and restore mold line to the hull.

Just thinking out loud here. If they work out the details hopefully we'll see some new long distance speed records. A monohull with these features has the potential to be a long range, safe boat that can handle the tough conditions, survive a capsize, etc.

 

To be clear,it was the mechanism that was being supplied to all competitors.I understand they will be developing the actual foils themselves.
