Especially if you haven't filed the required requite forms and permissions in triplicate with the appropriate "competent" authorities...

    Joseph T,
Puhleez. The whole land mass is one big regulated code. Never googled "antartica" or the people that go there but, obviously there is an organized effort by worldly officials (think deep state) to keep people away.

With Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, etc.. now blatantly censoring, making it difficult to do research that goes against approved narratives, and actually working hand in hand with state actors setting up controlled opposition websites; they are without doubt hiding something otherwise, why forbid people that want to visit basically a cold and uninviting wasteland ( according to "thier" accounts)

Notice though that is thru a tour company, who has already gone through the hoops and hurdles to gain the permissions and what not. Just like any other tourist/cruise operation, only much more expensive. And just like any other cruise, no you aren't "free move around". You're visa and permission is only good for the duration of the shore excusion. Same with the Antarctic junkets.

A Dutch gal got the idea to drive a tractor to the south pole, and so the BBC now calls her an explorer (incl. a video).

P.S. - just hire an Il-76* or the like to get there . . .

Conspiracy theories not required. Politicians and the bureaucratic desire to control and regulate is enough. The rational is that because the continent was largely pristine, they ought to "do something" to keep it nice, and.... keep other people out. And since it wasn't perceived as worth fighting over, they all agreed to just string a concertina of red tape around it so that nothing but (politically and economically insignificant) science is done instead of resource exploitation that could upset the status quo.

Russians generally are. But just because cutting red tape is expensive doesn't mean its impossible.

    Yes. Like tanks and paratroopers.

India might be an option too, the Indian Maitri research station shares the ice airstrip there with the Russians in Novolazarevskaya.

So lessons learned, go to the Russians or maybe the Indians for a permit to make landfall.

Thats not the way it works. Each nation-state is responsible for the actions of its individual citizens. That means enforcing treaty regulation, law, and requirements (insurance, fees, etc.). So even if you wanted to hire an Indian airplane to fly into the Russian base, you'd still need to get the permission of which ever government has claim to your soul.

In that way, travel to Antarctica is as hard as going to space. You have to get permission and approval to launch anything into orbit. And being bureaucracies, the one thing they love more than control, is costing the applicant the most of the effort and expense.

These conspiracy spouts drive me nuts.

The official protocols are there for anyone to look up.
The Antarctic Treaty Organisation administers information supplied by each signatory to the Treaty, and the co-operation and high standards adopted by the professionals down there are a tribute to common sense.

Moaning about Red Tape comes just before moaning about how F(*(*ed up the world is becoming.
We don't need removal of really sensible controls that ensure safety and non-pollution of what may become that last refuge of human civilisation as global warming progresses.

    Talk about nutty spouting...

You heard the one where they went thru McMurdo Station and confiscated everyone's "pet" house plants right? In mindless compliance with a UN regulation that was written thousands of miles away by people worrying over the hypothetical. But since you are into Global Warming I guess you're fine with that.
