Beats $600 in that Sydney Chandlery shop. Are Bote-Cote close to that price ? It would be interesting to check out West Systems too. You live pretty close to all the manufacturers. Its hard to get on-line quotes on resin.

I'm just looking, you'd be the folks that would know. This would mean the FGI pricing is about what we'd expect for the discount formulators in the states. On a retail level the discounters are about 1/2 of the major brands, while wholesale or in volume discounts, it's more like 1/4 - 1/3'rd of the big boys.

I have the transom stripped out so would be easy to slot and run stringers right through for a 600 mm extension

Haven't come across that brand, but maybe they can tell you who their formulaters are.

The best test is to ask them for a Product Property Sheet (Mechanical Performance) . It will have things like Tensile Strength, Sheer strength etc. ( like this one near the bottom of the page at https://www.systemthree.com/products/general-purpose-epoxy-resin )

I wouldn't know what it all meant, but the fact that they even have one is a good sign. I couldn't get that info off another "budget" supplier a year ago.

Still pluggin away here! Finished grinding the hull, the strakes have been filled with some sawdust / polyester mix, most of it has cracked away from the hull skin. I was thinking i should lay some glass in before i glue the stringers in. The glass in these areas is very thin. What would be the best material for bulk. Woven or biax?

Presuming the sawdust/poly mixture has cracked away from the Timber hull ?

Presuming the cracks are tiny ? ( 2-4 mm)

I am having trouble understanding what is going on, but if your fill material is having trouble adhering to the adjoining material, you might need to use Epoxy forr superior adhesion and waterproofing.

It really needs some photos to make sense of what you are saying.

The wood poly mix was used to bed stringers, the stringers sit in the "v" made by the external strakes. Since most of this bog has been removed and the glass is thin (from factory) I need to know the best material to place another layer of glass to strengthen the bottom before i put new stringers in. I will be using epoxy.

Use some kind of stitched reinforcement like biaxial, that will not spring out like a woven product is likely to do, in that tightish "V". Failing that, fill the vee with bog, and glass over the now flush surface. If it was polyester, you could use just mat, but CSM (chopped strand mat) can't be used with epoxy, because of a binder that dissolves in polyester and not epoxy. I don't like the sound of the thin glass though, how did you determine it is thin ?

Thanks Mr Efficiency, the boat has been rebuilt before, poorly i might add. I was scraping off the poorly wet out glass from that rebuild which took me to the original glass. The rebuild glass i mostly peeled off by hand. While sanding the original glass I chipped a bit near one of the strakes and put a small ,4mm, hole thru the hull. Glass appears to be about 2 to 3mm thick. Also the hull is all csm, chopper gun jobbie!.

Brisbane. Must take the tourist train ride up the mountain, to Kuranda one day. That is not very reassuring, the thin hull, make sure the boat has adequate flotation in case it decides to let go, one day.

Ya, thin alright. One layer of biax be enough before i glass stringers in. 2 layers of biax over stringers.

I think I'd like more glass under the stringers, tapering away from the where the stringer meets the hull, before glassing the stringer in.
