Mr E, are you of the thread purpose police, and if so, since when does a thread need a purpose, and why ? But if you want a purpose, then don't be such a bad reader and see e.g. post #16...

Properly installed and well maintained is one of the problems of self inflating life rafts Mr E, that's one of the reasons of this thread, and besides that, if you want yet an other purpose for this thread, some posters like to be the master of their own destiny when all communications have failed, so they prefer an all purpose sailing life dinghy, rather than to be brought as a lamb to the slaughter in a self inflating life raft in the middle of an ocean, isn't that enough reason to talk about it . . ?

You proved yourself as a very bad reader Mr E, since from post #1 and onwards this thread isn't about better self inflating life rafts, to be brought as a lamb to the slaughter when no help shows up, but about all purpose sailing life dinghies, to be able to help yourself when needed in an emergency.

By all means, be a "cheap Charlie" and shun expensive self-inflating life rafts, but don't peddle rot about the inherent unreliability of them, as an reason to look elsewhere, which is how this thread was kicked off.

Like I've said and pointed out in post #32 you're a very bad reader, and now you've just proved that again Mr E, the below quote is actually from post #1...

I read well enough, particularly this...….."death rafts, a false sense of security". Now, I wonder how many people who own a vessel so equipped, are having the "frighteners" put into them, by that ! Rightly or wrongly, that is the question. In my part of the world, many, many prawn trawlers have gone down into Davey Jones' locker over the years, frequently with no survivors, and never have I noticed one with a self-inflating life raft, there may be exceptions, but I have never noticed them, What I do notice is 12 foot alloy dinghys tied on the wheelhouse, which seems not to help, when the excreta hits the fan. It may well be self-inflating life rafts would get tangled up in the considerable ironmongery of a trawler, but I'd sooner take that chance, than have effectively, nothing.

Like I've already said and pointed out in post #32 and #34, you've proven yourself as a very bad reader and now you've just proved it again Mr E, since in post #16 I gave an example where it certainly would have helped, your just preaching baseless nonsense against the given real life examples, well so be it, since you have the right to your own opinion as an opposite to the many presented facts on this thread, since those give you (in post #30) . . .

I have yet to hear about any of these aforementioned trawlermen coming ashore in their tin dinghy, after their main vessel sank. One might get lucky one day, in the meantime, I suspect a self-inflater would be a good way to improve the odds. I get the feeling the OP baulks at the idea of shelling out big bucks for a top-line life raft, and is fishing around for cheap alternatives. If these alternatives really are viable, and cheap, well, get both, and improve your chances further ! After all, the self-inflating ones are not a big package.

By now it's clear that particularly reading of specific parts in your case leads to selective reading, and not getting the thread as a whole, so you end up being exposed as a bad reader every time you take just a few words to pan at.

So the thread title is misleading, so far as the OP's thesis is concerned ? You best take that up with him !

The thread title gives a good indication about this thread, but as always isn't covering all the content, that's why it's a thread and not only a title, capeesh . . ?

That's a bit of similar to what I've said in post #16, but the opposite proposition, having also a hard dinghy there would have improved their odds, while they only had a failing self inflating life raft.

When no help comes on long distances, then the best odds are surely to be the master of your own destiny in a sailing life dinghy.

Right, well my take on the "purpose of this thread", is that we have a customer suffering "sticker shock" at the price of these rafts, and is trying to convince at least himself, that the expense can be avoided, with an alternative that is both cheap, and does the job at least as well. That seems unlikely to me , but carry on !

That's the take of a bad reader Mr E, since post #1 clearly states that the OP is looking for a cheaper alternative for the Portland Pudgy sailing life dinghy, and not a life raft.
Thanks for your generosity, I wouldn't dare to do so without your permission . . ;)

Well then, the scare campaign regarding those life rafts, was a redundant feature that I, as a "bad reader", mistook as the central message being promoted ! :)

Well the scare campaign regarding self inflatable life rafts was actually people telling each other why they would prefer to upgrade the dinghy to a sailing life dinghy, above having a non sailing inflatable contraption, where you can do no other thing then pray, which of course might help, but to only pray would at least be against the bible, which says you should work too . . ;)
