Downforce---A fully electronically controlled system might not be required: skipper/crew could wear a device ,like a TV remote, that would simply require a button to be pushed to create maximum downforce from the daggerboard lifting foil.*
*As far as know Banque Pop rakes the whole daggerboard to change the angle of incidence of the foil. Gitana 17, on the other hand, moves a flap on the main foil to create downforce.

Today news, Banque Pop IX is now in Casablanca Harbour and again upright.
"Towed since Sunday, the Maxi Banque Populaire joined late yesterday the port of Casablanca after traveling the 130 miles that separated it from the coast. The technical team proceeded this morning to the reversal operation in order to be able to begin a first diagnosis of the boat and tries to carry out the ship return to Lorient as soon as possible. Ronan Lucas, Director of the Banque Populaire Team, makes a first observation :
"The towing took 48 hours because we were extremely careful not to risk further damage to the trimaran. This morning we put it upright with a crane. We can now make an initial assessment of the damage, it is found that numerous parts of the central deck around the mast foot are damaged, as well as for amas deck and the akas fairings ; some parts of the cap are also washed away.
We have already anticipate the repairs of the trimaran, examining the different solutions for equipping it with a mast and a boom. The clear objective is to put the boat back on water before the end of the summer and so to give Armel enough time to prepare in good conditions the "Route du Rhum" in Saint-Malo "

Thanks for the info, Dolfiman. All the teams sure are talking about the necessity to fly-which is cool -but no pictures or details on the foils that I've found. When all these boats get together including Banque Pop and Gitana 17 there will be some real excitement- looking forward to it!

This is wrong. In reading more about Banque Populaire, I found that they do use a small flap on the main foil so raking the daggerboard would not be necessary to change the angle of incidence of the foil and the theoretical response time would be faster. Still haven't found any indication that they used the flap to create downforce to try to arrest the capsize.

In the capsize shots I've seen the horizontal plane of the daggerboard foil seems to be gone.

Wow! Where did you find that picture? They said that initially the mast was under the boat-I wonder if that could have broken the foil off? Have you seen any pictures of the daggerboard from the side? Thanks for the heads up!!

In complement , this long interview of Armel Le Cleac'h , in French ( sorry , too long to translate). He is back on the capsize circumstances : in short the anti capsize system was not fully in place , only the ease of the main sheet, not yet the one for the jib but it was scheduled for the coming days. When the overheel occurred, he could triggered the mainsheet ease immediately, which began to act (they could check that), but that was not sufficient to stop the heel move. They have all the data on speed, wind and autopilot so they can know how strong was the gust. On the other hand, they had already faced trouble with the wind vane. No any mention of daggerboard foil or flap.

Interesting! I wrote Guillaume last night and sent him the picture Corley posted. His response this morning was "They may well have capsized due to that loss."
That from a guy that has pioneered the design of a mainfoil on the daggerboard of a fullsize trimaran. Makes sense.....
    ------
UPDATE: I wrote to Banque Populaire to ask if the daggerboard foil was removed during the capsize or for some other reason. The "Contact" form was non-functional last night and this morning so I e-mailed the manager of press relations.......
