I spent some time in front of this painting a while back looking at the detail. It was painted in 1815 but the tools are the same today except for the curious box thing that looks like a kind of jack. I was reminded of it today watching oakum being rolled.

I can't change the orientation of this...no doubt it's stupidly simple, can someone tell me how please. <now fixed by rotating and resaving with photoshop>

Hi Nick, thanks for the pics . . :)

I can rotate the second pic in my laptop, but when uploaded it comes out the same, sorry can't help you here . . :(

The curious box thing that looks like a kind of jack in the painting, that is a kind of jack . .

In Dutch it's called a ‘‘Dommekracht’’, literally translated this means ‘‘Dumb Force’’, in reality it's called a ‘‘Rack Jack’’ in English.

The ‘‘Boat Building near Flatford Mill’’ turns out to be painted by John Constable.

Not sure what caused the rotation glitch with the second jpg - fixed now though. (Going "old school" and opening with Photoshop, Corel, or probably even Paint, rotating, and resaving as a new jpg bypasses any issue with an exif rotation tag in the file.)

Nick, Angel - thanks for all the interesting material. The dry dock has been excavated and restored: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/flatford/features/flatford-dry-dock

An image search will reveal photo stock of the restored dock in flood. Timber pipes were used to drain the dock to a culvert on the far side of the river.

A couple of questions; What is that just behind the barge in the Constable? A windlass? A pump? and what is the seated person in the foreground wearing? it looks like they have something flat and very shiny on their back, which reaches up to their pony tail....

Not sure, but it looks to me like a Hand Powered Grind Stone, aka Sharpening Wheel.

Don't really know, here's a zoom in together with the rack jack, the upper part of the ponytail seems to be bound together by spaced straps, maybe we see long loose hair underneath the fixed part of the ponytail on her back . . ?

P.S. - What seems to be loose hair to me looks to be painted in the same style as where the oakum she rolls is still loose on the ground, on her left side, so getting a bit more confident we see long loose blonde hair shining in the sun on her back below the bound together part of the ponytail . . :)

If it's a hand and/or foot powered grindstone, aka sharpening wheel, we see there near the river, then I'd suppose it has an wooden frame, like the casing of the rack jack, as both being built before 1815, this was merely customary for machine tools from the era.
