This double handed Trans Atlantic race will start from Le Havre by 5 November, with 4 boat classes including the Ultims like Gitana 17 (its first race), Multi 50, Imoca and Class 40, you can follow the race with : Home - Transat Jacques Vabre 2017 https://www.transatjacquesvabre.org/en/

And as for the Mini transat, I recommend you to play the Virtual Regatta in parallel (link includes in the menu of the above site), the best way to be " in the race" with the real boats and to have an idea of the potential speeds of the Ultims in every meteocean conditions.

Gitana started in third place and is now in second. Unless there is some kind of error her speed is now 19 knots compared to 9+ for the leader who is about 1 mile ahead.
    Go Gitana!

Comment in French along with the video googletrans:

Born in Vannes in Brittany, Gitana 17 is the Maxi-Trimaran Edmond De Rothschild, mastodon of 15 tons, able to fly up to 1.5 meters above the water involved in the Transat Jacques Vabre. From Le Havre to Salvador de Bahia, 4,350 miles will lead the Transat Jacques Vabre fleet off the Alabaster coast off Brazilian waters. This long diagonal from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere is a sprint on the Atlantic with an estimated race time of 8 to 10 days for the Ultimate, which includes the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild.

The origin of the Transat is based on the history of the major Atlantic maritime routes: the latter are essentially linked to the tremendous economic boom between the American and European continents, the first Transat Jacques Vabre which linked Le Havre to Cartagena (Colombia) was thus in the oceanic wake of coffee. In 2013, then in 2015, all the boats marched in front of Salvador de Bahia pushed by the trade winds of the south-east under the sun of the tropics ... One imagines that they dreamed probably of finally stopping their race in the bay of all the Saints. In 2017, this will be reality.

Yes, here attached are print screens of the Virtual Regatta with position of Gitana and Sodebo, with current and future (next 12h) winds. In few hours they will turn again South for a reaching with good winds.

Some virtual boats have continued South despite the light winds ahead, it is the interest of this virtual regatta that always a fraction of the virtual fleet choose an opposite option, .... and sometimes it is the good one !
