The below picture comes from post #1 . . .

That looks all do-it-yourself made of mostly wood and some metal combined with junkyard parts such as the bevel gear transmission box and the propeller, which is the best way to go for these kind of projects I think, unless you have a sustainable budget for it.

So what is your budget, and what is your project about, and what do you want it to do ?

See also Pedal Powered Boats ---> post #1139, although that's a bit more advanced DIY then on this thread . . . o_O

‘‘ . . . Materials were purchased on Mcmaster.com and bearings were purchased on Grainger.com. I used flange bearings since I knew I would send the design to a shop that could machine the bearing bores accurately. It is a 4:1 ratio. It weighs 5.4 lbs with crank arms. It is not cheaper than the custom Mitrpak boxes, but it is higher ratio and should have higher torque capability. . . . ’’

No George, you want pedal power, "peddle power" is what salesmen rely on ! :)

To help George out here . . .

peddle = try to sell (something, especially small goods) by going from house to house or place to place.

E.g. ‘‘ after George had made a huge success of his project he peddled pedal powered paddle and also propeller driven boats plus their drive unit parts apart around the country and became a multi billionaire by doing so, and as such he granted a fair amout of money to Mr. E and Angel who were his tutors before he had totally overgrown them, which of course occurred fairly fast to say at least !! ’’

Spartans_68 I look forward to seeing pictures of your completed project and the race.
The most efficient wing is a long thin one (which is why gliders/sailplanes have them) and a propeller blade is just a twisted wing. So human powered and small electric powered craft do well with model airplane propellers. Boat props have short fat blades for other reasons such as strength, shallow draft, ability to shed weed etc. But, considering the budget and time left for experimenting I would stick with what you've got, you will do ok.
I wish I had pictures of my cardboard projects - a hydroplane like an Everglades airboat when I was about ten, a little cabin cruiser a few years later, and a radio controlled sailing boat in my twenties. Good luck, don't forget the pictures!

This is a cardboard canoe with no waterproofing. The rules only allowed duct tape at the seams. I went through the rapids twice and it was still floating fine.

I dare say the next time someone is grateful for having their spelling error pointed out, will be the first time ! :(

The effective barb-wire canoe has evaded designers, despite it getting frequent mention in anecdotes.

I suspected that it might not travel ! In this part of the world, a person that has got themselves into an unenviable predicament, is said to be "up **** creek in a barb-wire canoe". No doubt there are variations of that.

    Quote is from post #1:
Gonzo's cardboard canoe is an on topic anecdote here, Mr. E's barbed wire canoe is about an off topic myth as far it's about boating . .

The old English saying ‘‘up the creek’’ (1771–1805) has on it's enduring travels around the world been enlarged to ‘‘up sh¡t's creek in a barbed wire canoe without a paddle’’ all meaning ‘‘being in trouble’’ which doesn't apply to Gonzo here, I believe . .

Edit = added quote to top of the post
