These guys are sailing on the edge. A few mistakes or a gear failure and Oracle is right back in. Wind speed is a very important factor. Higher winds means greater risk and a better chance for Oracle - providing that they don't make mistakes. But they are probably feeling more pressure then TNZ

Dennis Conner has mentioned a whisper that next AC may go back to mono hull. We have not seen tight match racing with these flying
machines but that is more for the purests. These short, fast races suit the modern public better IMO

Apparently Bermuda has not been a great venue. The super yachts have not come in and it lacks the the rich list carnival atmosphere of past events

A win for TNZ and future events in Auckland would be good for AC. I feel that crews should be national to truly represent each nation. There is no way that the the NZ public would accept a foreigner as skipper as the Americans do. It should be like the Olympic games

Michael, it's hard for me to support Oracle because I disagreed so much with the decision to go to Bermuda. The racing in the playoffs was sometimes spectacular, but when it counts in terms of viewership and the public impression of the AC there has been no close racing-just like in the mono days-just a parade. Maybe that will change this weekend and the guys will comeback once again-for their sake and the sake of the Cup I hope so.
I support much stronger nationality rules but not going back to leadbellies-unless they are foiling leadbellies!

Some hints are already emerging on the next format and design rules. These wiz boats will not work on Auckland Harbour where wind and seas are much more variable. Aside from this there is talk of making it more traditional again. The razzmatazz of the foiling cats that was designed to attract more general TV viewing clearly did not work outside of NZ. There may well be a revert to displacement mono hulls and arm-to-arm match racing. I find these matches intriguing and sailors love it.

 

The origin of the term match racing was when two owners came to a startline to determine which of them had the fastest boat.The current series is in that tradition.I can't say that the series with monohulls were quite the same as they were so focused on using the racing rules to put the opposing boat at a disadvantage.I would prefer to see a series that emphasises the speed of the winner.

 

I think it would be a huge step backwards to go back to leadbellies unless they were foilers but even then they couldn't compete with these extraordinary cats. I hope TNZ doesn't do that........ In the playoffs there were more lead changes than in the whole history of the Americas Cup from what I've heard. And in 2013 there were more closely fought races and lead changes than in any previous televised Cups-and I watched them all. It's a shame that the actual Cup races this time were such a blowout.

Can I ask where the evidence is for your claim that they were trying to determine the fastest boat, and not the best sailor?

While respect for the aims of the Cup is great, the Cup was also aimed at sea-going boats. AC50s, like AC72s and IACC boats, are not sea-going craft in that way. It's hard to argue that the Cup has to follow tradition in some respects but throw tradition out in other respects.

Of course, discussion of the Cup's future has to allow for issues such as the fact that we can't compare the number of lead changes in very short races held within tightly-confined spaces to earlier Cups in which the races were much longer and were sailed on open water.
