The best innovations often come from those not hemmed in by the knowledge of what will and what won't work, though they don't get it all right, they might get one or two pieces right and that feeds others that improve and innovate. Negativity is the worst ever thing you can be.

Not when it comes to innovating man... The Chinese are really good at copying and efficiency but do you see any ground breaking innovations coming from them and innovation is the egg not the chicken. Knowledge and Imagination both have their place, negativity has NO place

Anyone can put out senseless "new ideas" and call it innovation.
Doesn't mean it is, or will ever have any value.

    True innovation is priceless.
But it always has some justification.

I have an idea that faster than light spacetravel should be available next year.
    Would you like to invest?????
Now that is real innovation, in your terms.

Don't doubt the power of skepticism, if there is some value in this cartoon, the skeptic will point to issues that have to be solved.
That's more help than just saying "oh, wow!!! what a pretty picture".

Just remember the personal computer, the modern automobile or airplane were once looked on as delusional fantasies ... actually we and the planet would all be better off without that stuff lol!!!!! ... But then that conversation gets way deep

My wife always says: don't lower yourself in arguing with this kind of person. You are too intelligent for that. You are right in all your threads. It reminds me, when I placed a provisional patent some 28 years ago, when Philips brought out a 12 Volt small radar component. I made an automatic breaking system for motorcars (automobiles) which kicked in when the car at whatever speed, was driving too close at the back of another car. People made similar remarks. Today Mercedes Benz and many other cars are now incorporating this technology in their cars. I had many provisonal and full patents registered and in many instances people were very negative. Don't lower yourself to his level. Bert

    Which ones were they?

And why is it seen to be negative to be willing learn from others?

The first thing that Wilbur Wright did when he decided to become involved in aircraft was to write to the Smithsonian Institute and ask them to send him every piece of written information they had on the theory of heavier-than-air flight. They learned an enormous amount from the writings of people like Cayley and Lilienthal.

The Wrights are a classic example of people doing what Newton did - learning from others and using the knowledge and materials they had available. They would have created nothing if they had sat around and doodled supersonic jets.

It was a similar story with boating innovations such as modern hydrofoil sailing craft and the windsurfer. In both cases the creators had a thorough knowledge of the physical reality and of materials.

Your invention apparently used readily available components and showed an understanding of the physics involved. This yacht design does not do that and therefore it doesn't appear to be a good comparison.

You may not agree with the ideas and approach followed by people like Newton, Einstein and the Wright Brothers, but to resort to insults in a forum discussion isn't a very productive way to behave.

    You gentlemen misunderstand.

My issue was with this illustration.
Please suggest anything you think has merit on the boat in this thread.

At work I was always known as someone who had ideas that were not mainstream.
But I always had a rationale of why my idea could work. Their success or failure depended upon real work, not an unsupported illustration.

Bert - doesn't sound like you just had an unsupported idea.

Sorry you guys don't understand what I was saying.
But ignoring ideas goes both ways, doesn't it?

... Ummm where did I say that?

Are you saying people didn't think the idea of commercial flight was crazy? Or that everyone expected they would one day have horseless carriages, cell phones that they would text on as they crossed a street and personal computers they used on airplanes lol ... those last ones I remember!!

Come on man, those people who started that revolution were called stark raving mad!

This, I would argue, is a byproduct of ideology rather than anything else.

Remember, for example, how many companies in China are PLA at this time. Many if not the overwhelming majority of these are no doubt run by very intelligent and hard working individuals; however, they also come with baggage if they've risen in rank enough to be trusted.

But just as important as things like that has to be the devastation that was wrought during Mao's efforts to hold power, the loss of so many people and all they might have done must still cast a long shadow.

Maybe you can finally answer my question: was the guy who thought of putting gps in cars really just tired of his wife pestering him to stop and get directions or what? ;)

Yeah, the Chinese have been so oppressed for so long that they have very little room for risks or thinking out of the box.

When oppression exists, characters develop, not personalities. And I guess innovation suffers too.

In short, what does it try to achieve all this complicated structure? Or put another way, what advantages does it have over a traditional hoist?
