Thats not true-this is the pinnacle of sailboat design and racing -most everything on these boats are extraordinary developments that, at a later date, could "trickle down" having been proved in the greatest sailboat design/race competition there is. The AC is a "candy store" of development!

Being a serious cyclist, I suggested this to the Young America people when I was consulting for that campaign in the early 90's. Seemed like an obvious solution. The answer was a polite "that's not how it's done". Apparently, foiling is killing off more traditions than we think.

 

Did they give reasons for not using leg power? Surely it can't just be tradition, because it was tried (and abandoned) in 12 Metre days and the TVNZ piece says that Oracle and Softbank considered and abandoned the idea. The Australian Olympic squad, for example, has been heavily into cycling for fitness for years (one of the 2000 squad later finished about 5th in the masters cycling worlds) so there doesn't seem to be any psychological resistance to gaining advantage from cycling per se. To my eye the TNZ guys are still significantly slower to develop power than the normal grinders, but given the speed with which CX racers can leap aboard it may improve with training.

Oracle and others considered foils before 34 and abandoned the idea...until they saw TNZ foiling.

 

They didn't give any other reason.

The clip-in time argument seems kinda lame. Since the IACC boats had grinding-power accumulators, you could remove the six grinding posts (three on each side) with two pedal stations in the center. The pedalers wouldn't have to move. And it's not obvious that clips would be such a huge benefit anyway, since with accumulation there much less need for sprint power.

 

Yes, as a sometime CXer I'm ambivalent about the issue of the time taken to sit down.
