I do remember this quote by a long time admirer and designer of motorsailers.

My time chronological 'desired boat' evolution goes like this:

Earliest requirement thru to thinking about retirement phase:

1. Ocean going yacht capable of taking the worst beating.
2. More space.
3. Motorsailor
4. More usable deck space.
4. Open back pilothouse with flush rear deck.

So I arrived at @45 feet - don't want to go bigger but smaller won't work either.
Must be good looking or it's a waste of money.

Sail well and a capable motor.
Accommodation suitable for a 3 month cruise.
Protection of the wheelhouse but a good sized rear deck for eating out and those summer nights sitting with friends blah blah blahing.

A lifetime away from my earlier dreams of an all weather ocean passage maker where you slip down a hole into the cabin with a small exposed cockpit for 4 people.

But my ideal configuration exists! In two formats... old or new.

The old we know, the Philip Rhodes Virginia Reel style 44' motorsailor, but perhaps a lot more interesting if we can move away from nostalgia is the Moody 45 DS (and 54') which tick all the boxes. She's not a lightweight either, 14mt on 45' with a decent sail area 1,126 ft2 and a 106hp Volvo.

I chartered a 43' Ocean1s last summer in Sardinia and whilst our boat was fine, there was a 45' DS anchored at the same beach one day and we looked across and I have to admit it, thought how well the design concept worked. Ok, you're not going to take it round the Horn or battle the Southern Ocean but down Italy and over to Greece with golden beaches and golden girls in abundance?

She is the modern motorsailor.

 

What vessel is that you attached photo of?
I think I remember seeing one at the Annapolis Boat Show a number of years ago, but I've forgotten specifics.

It does look to be a nice design for a modern motorsailer.

 

It's the. Moody 45DS that I talk about above!

 

RHP, it looks fine but it has a big stick stuck in the deck and no motors hanging on the back.

 

One of the hassles in powering a MS for optimum fuel use is the near impossibility of obtaining a BMEP or fuel map from small engine builders.

Easy enough to come close to the power requirements at SL .7 or .8 , but really hard to set the drive train up with engine performance the unknown.
