Like Ike I doubt it. PB skipper violated Rule 2 (Rule of Good Seamanship and the General Prudential Rule), Rule 5 (Lookout),Rule 7 (Risk of Collision) and Rule 8 (Action to Avoid Collision), and maybe Rule 6 (Safe Speed) as well as 33 CFR 165.1317 (large passenger vessel security and safety zone which extends 500 yards around a moving ferry, and all vessels must operate at the minimum speed necessary to maintain a safe course and proceed as directed by the ferry master or on-scene Coast Guard patrol.

The Ferry was only burdened under Rule 15 (Crossing Situation), but took obvious action under Rule 2, 6 & 8. It will be hard to prove a Rule 7 violation in light of 33 CFR 165.1317.

No great loss then ! I cannot imagine the feeling that overtook this chap as it all went wrong. But, it could have been much worse, as in fatal.

I still dream of building that boat and doing the Great Loop ... maybe I should investigate a toilet variation on the captain's chair?

    (actually, that's somewhat serious)

I've been on these waters for decades, what these ferry captains deal with on a daily basis can be crazy. It was even worse when they allowed intense commercial fishing (netting) in the areas, the ferries would need to navigate around nets, sometimes coming to a complete stop.

They've also had some scandals where the Captains took different routes for sightseeing, ran them aground, had visitors on the bridge that shouldn't be there, crew scheduling designed to maximize pay, etc.

You're right, see the below quote with a line from the original article and its translation, guess it was that little devil inside me that tried to be funny about someone's misfortune, so now I'll have to stick to my header ‘‘aka Angel (only by name)’’ for a while longer . .

You're right too, I've copy pasted the title as per YouTube, but I should have adapted it to something like you suggested, which I just did in the original post . . :)

How can you tell the ferry is at a dead stop? The first 20 seconds of the video I thought the coast was moving relative to the railing
After that I can't tell...the cameraman is walking toward the stern. Is he walking the whole time?

The ferry boat hit the stand on vessel. And you want to blame the stand on vessel for the collision?

Don't get me wrong the recreational vessel will get dinged for failing to maintain a watch, and failing to take evasive maneuvers AFTER it became clear that the keep clear vessel wasn't going to, but the principle failure was the ferries.

With all due respect, I think that position is ridiculous. The hove-to ferry boat was clearly rammed by an out of control vessel not under control but underway.

The collision occurred on the port side of the M/Y about half way back from the bow. Unless the MY was sliding sideways there is no way that collision occurred with the ferry moving astern.

But even if your reading of it is correct. There was a collision between a stand on vessel operating at a constant speed and course (because the idiot driver was in the head and NOT in command of his vessel) and a give way vessel. The fact that the stand on vessel should have and didn't take corrective action to avoid the collision, in no way diminishes the give way vessels failure to give way.

Maybe my orientation is wrong, but to me the video looks like it is shot starting looking to starboard, over the starboard bow. And finishes as the MV passes in front of the ferry.

So what I see is a give way vessel that t-boned the stand-on vessel. No poor sea manship of the stand on vessel can excuse that.

So you think it is okay to ram at will as long as you do it with the port bow. Ridiculouser than ever. :p
