Sterndrives and outboards operate in similar conditions as pods and use thrust to steer. Maybe you should refine your question.

I guess he means propellers mounted on rudders.

I saw an article once with that, an electric outboard motor & prop was built into a transom hung rudder, was a small boat & so as to still look nice, they may have had two rudders, one with & one without..

    Refined question

I will refine my question for you Gonzo.

Will a prop/rudder help with some of the surface drive draw backs at low speed?

Will a joint at both ends of a shaft moving the prop up and down help in Low speed, reverse?

Will this help handling the surface drive lacks?

Run out of time for now! I will have finish later.

    Loose question

I posted on the surface drive forum to stay on point! The loose question brings more open minded input.
Thank you for the link. I have refined my question.

A shaft from the mid ship inboard to a surface drive rudder propeller is one way i have in mind!

    Thank you,

    Prop steering

Will this work with no rudder? The pivot at the transom is a good way to do that design.

    Thank you,

What drawbacks do you think surface drives have? They are several models that have been in the market for decades that have trim and steering incorporated. Many also have rudders in different configurations. Further, surface drive is really a misnomer. Any drive can use a ventilated propeller if installed properly for the application. For example, the original Sea Sleds run ventilated propeller with a straight shaft. What problem are you trying to solve?
