Pacific proa Crystal Clear sailing!!!!!

Hi all, Dreams come true!!!
here she is finally sailing, she will go anywhere, down wind she is so tame its amazing..... up wind not bad and pretty fast, again very happy....
she's just so balanced and easy to sail that it's a blast sailing her,
the crab claw schooner is flawless, up and down wind, so Cool!

Yeah, tame is the word. My first trimaran with a small Gaff sail because I was scared silly of wind was just as slow.

When you get a decent rig, you might be abel to travel somewhere at an acceptable speed.

I bet your angle to windward is really huge - not good for headwinds

 

I don't think running at 4 knots in 8 knots wind is slow!
nether do I think she's poor to windward, We shunted back to our launch spot no problem, she will do 120 between shunts, but 130 is much faster.
the oceanic lateen is powerful and the boat speeds up on beam reaches, Pacific Proas can get very dangerous with a big rig! and where will I store longer spars? how much more complicated will reefing become with longer spars??
Time will tell.........

I've very much enjoyed your posts following your build, and your innovative and pragmatic approach to hardware.

Lovely to see Crystal Clear sailing. Please post more video when you have time, and keep us up to date with any expeditions and alterations and improvements.

 

Could you give an idea of Crystal Clear's basic spec/dimensions? length/beam, displacement, sail area, any berths below deck?

VAKA:
LOA 7 meters
max Beam 75 cm, leepod 75 cm. total 1.5 meters at center
Draft at max load 44cm ( rudder down, about 70)

AMA:
LOA 4.5 meters
Max beam 40 cm
Draft 30 approx, as i'm not totally sure.....

Ama can carry 100 liters of water ballast, but still must install the pump and plumbing.... but for now I will try moving weight (gear) on the nets closer to the ama, if that helps I may not install the water ballast pump and gear... we see.

Sail plan:
oceanic lateen schooner.

masts 60x5 tubes of alluminium 6082 2.7 meters long
Yard and boom 60 mm spruce 4 meters long, slightly tapered to save weight and to create a better leading edge....

each sail is 6.5 square meters, 2 reef bands, at 25% 1st reef and second at 50%. except for those we have brailing lines that work very well.

TOTAL WIDTH:
460 cm

TOTAL WEIGHT:
around 400 kg dry (yes, a bit much.... but she's tough!!!)
VAKA, rig and half bridge deck are about 330, the rest is the ama and half the akas over it.

Vaka displacement:
around 650 liters to max water line.
AMA total displacement around 200 liters, NOT to water line, but total hull displacement, may be a bit shy.... time will tell.

2 single berths, from center to mast bulkhead and the second is the same going to the other mast, length 1.75 meter, width at shoulders around 50 cm.

That's all I can think of for now, but I will start working on
uploading her design as soon as things calm down........

Dig and envious...should have my tacking outrigger (proa or boat) in deference wet as soon as I get broken goose neck repaired.
