The end of the world is near....... what Yacht will you build?

A few years have gone since this thread was open...How about we restart it and look at ideas and see what has changed?

Who would love to go first...

 

That's funny. A yacht is probably the last thing I would need at the end of the world.

Its not like you would be welcome anywhere you went, and the fishing is all bad.

... and I personally would like to have an enlarged take on Bolger's Wyoming, not as heavy as the Illinois though.

1)Could launch it by myself with normal car, and maybe launch over mud, sand or rocks with a few planks...so I wont be tied to marina slip. Hold boat option in reserve in hidden location till first riots destroy yacht clubs.

2)Fast enough with big outboard to get clear of some trouble, plus big outboard for other use on other boats.

3)Able to go up river.

4)Able to sail with reasonable open ocean ability, if the other option is Zombies, Dead Squads or Communist Camp.

5)Flotation.

6)Cheap enough that it wouldn't soak up all prepping plan money.

7)Use as land based trailer home.

8)Biggest, heaviest boat to single hand manhandle, smallest, lightest, cheapest boat to live aboard or risk in open ocean.

 

A mid-size shoal draft/keelboard cruiser, all aluminum hull would be a good choice. A lot of boats have caught my eye, but I would really like a boat similar to the Kiribati 36. I prefer a 40-45 footer, but the 36 looks nice with its headroom. It's a simple, robust design. You could trim it out nice with your favorite wood, add the brass touches and she would be a gem ready to leave the zombie apocalypse behind.

I sail/race now in a 45ft all aluminum sloop and it's a very tough boat. It's got a deep keel though, which limits its access to the shallow beaches.

My answer hasn't changed much. A nuclear air craft carrier, but this time I would want one of the water-to-AV gass factories installed as well. So you would have unlimited range with the planes as well... probably a zodiac or two just for fun.

 

Where I am a boat is the best thing for such a scenario-can get away from marauders and never be found-and the fishing is very good.

What I have now-enough space to be able to prep and store food,tons of fuel with a very low consumption diesel gen set,and millions of tons of firewood around.

 

Seems like I read somewhere that in the end we will be destroyed by fire, not water, the seas will boil, so I guess you'll need an insulated flame proof vessel. I think I'd just as soon sit back with a case of good beer and meet the maker, not sure I'd want to be the only one left. But, then there is that bunch heading to Mars!

 

I hear Mars has been experiencing glowball warming too ...which is nice: means early settlers should find a ready supply of free SUVs.

 

Winds are high on Mars, perhaps a land sailing yacht would be the better choice.
