beginner

hi i'm just beginning to understand this boat world. i am really interested to learn more about on how to design a yacht, i am still a student but not related to boating. please, help me where to start with to understand these things. thanks

Yacht design and naval architecture are engineering disciplines. It's is something that can be self taught, though this takes a lot longer than an actual education on the subject.

The library here has many books to get you started and I'd recommend Dave Gerr's "The Nature of Boats" as a first reference. It's not going to teach you how to design, but will provide a good overview, of the various formulas and methods used, in an easy to read and understand format. If this doesn't scare you away, the traditional texts on the subject can be a pretty "thick read", but this is what you'll need to absorb, so get a handle on it. Again, if still interested, the next book should be "Principles of Yacht design".

 

I am a hobbyist myself and second Par's recommendation of Gerr as 1st read.

"The common sense of yacht design" is a book that in spite of its age is still a great read.

 

Can you tell us more about what you want to learn? Motor or sail? Large or small? Mono or multihull?

 

Years ago I read a book called I believe 'The Proper Yacht.' which was about suitable boat design for blue water sailing boats. I see on the internet there is such a book by Beiser, Arthur. I wonder if that's it. I'll buy a copy, only a few quid, and let you know. I remember the proper yacht had to be a ketch, so you had a spare mast.

 

hi, i've searched the net for this book, the nature of boats by gerr , but unfortunately, all the books that are available have prices and as a student, it's expensive for me to buy one. do you have a copy of this that i can just have or anything that i can do to avoid some expenses? thank you

 

I had no trouble finding used versions of "The Nature of Boats" for less than $10 (USD) online. A new paperback is about $15. I understand the limited funds a student can have, but you're not going to find cheaper.
