So if the public had opted for the RRS S***box, it would have won the day, on democratic grounds.

The NERC name our ship site is open for suggestions until 16th April.

NERC have made it clear that they are not obliged to use any name- it is their decision.

This is the 'leader board' as voted for by the internet.

If you scroll down, you can see that

    a) Boaty McBoatface is the runaway public favourite, and that

    b) the majority of the entries are not 'serious' names.

The form Xxxx McXxxxface comes from, IIRC, the much loved BBC comedy series 'Blackadder' which ran during the 1980s, starring, amongst others, Rowan Atkinson, Steven Fry and Hugh Laurie, with Richard Curtis and Ben Elton the main writers.

Edmund Blackadder used the form when berating Baldrick's stupidity,
generally in the form (e.g.): Baldrick was so stupid that he couldn't recognise that floaty thing with a sail was a boat even if it were named Boaty McBoatface.

For the record, Hampshire County Firebrigade have a fire engine (truck) called 'Fiery McFireface'

A lack of respect for authority is without doubt a facet of British humour.

That being the case I'd have chosen "The Scottish Play" instead.

It comes with its own unique crossing the line ceremony.

When I lived in the San Francisco area in the late '60s they had a public contest to name a new ferryboat and a logo. One of the main contenders was "Hi! I'm Bruce the ferry! Ride me to Sausalito!"
    Something less memorable won.

Sometimes I think that Rowan Atkinson can be almost as stupid as that Mr Bean.
