Here is a first photo of Jacob Hendrickson's Pacific Rowboat being built at Schooner Creek Boat Works, just in from Steve Rander.

Another Trans-Pacific rowing expedition ended with success a few days ago as a team of 4 British women rowers arrived at Cairns, Far North Queensland, having started off from the US west coast. They did stop off twice en route. I noticed a lot of barnacles clinging to the boat, so they might have been working a little harder than necessary. They may well have been behind schedule, as they arrived in the middle of the cyclone season. I'd reckon the novelty would wear off quickly for 99% of people, but these are unusually motivated people.

Eric, are they making a mould for future commissions? I hope so....

    Hi RHP,

I doubt it. Someone would have to pay for it (probably some tens of thousands of dollars), and this boat is expensive enough as it is. However, if someone else wants to buy/build one, they can contact me for permission and to purchase the plans. I still own the rights to the design.

Steve Rander says more pictures will follow.

    Pacific Rowboat Build Photos

Here are a few more photos of Jacob Hendrickson's rowboat. In the first photo, the people are left to right, Jacob Hendrickson, Peter Thomsen, and Steve Rander. The second photo is of Jacob and the boat.

More pictures from the build of the Pacific rowboat. These show the laying of carbon fiber onto the hull, then an outer sacrificial layer of glass cloth (for filling and fairing), also cutting of the foam keel and putting in place on the hull.

The Pacific Rowboat hull under post-cure. From builder, Steve Rander, "The next step will be some surface primer/fairing and she will be ready to pull off the mold and turn right side up."

The keel is attached and hull is going through final fairing.

Here are two more progress pictures from Schooner Creek Boatworks in Portland, Oregon, courtesy of Steve Rander. These show the hull with 545 primer and then being made ready for roll-over.

Hi Eric I love this thread, thanks for posting.

Can you please tell us what will be wall thickness of the finished hull be?
How many layers of carbon and how many layers of glass fibre?

The hull is obviously very thin, strong and light and BEAUTIFUL
I shudder to think what this project is going to cost.

    Thanks

    Hi Manie,
The core in the hull and deck house is Core-Cell M80, 1" thick (25 mm) and the skins are two layers of 11 ounce/sq.yd. carbon fiber fabrics oriented at 0°/90° (outside) and ±45° (next to core), repeated mirror image on the inside laminate. Over this is laid a sacrificial layer of 6 ounce glass cloth on the outside to help with fairing--some of the sanding will cut through that but not through the carbon fiber. So overall laminate thickness is a little over an inch thick, about 1-1/8" or so, maybe a hair less.

The original specified fiberglass lay-up was to be two layers of 1208 fiberglass knitted fabrics 0°/90° (outside) and ±45° (next to core) with a layer of 10 ounce glass on the outside. But the overall cost in carbon was not that much greater, and the boat would be a few hundred pounds lighter, so that's why carbon was finally used.

I am not at liberty to say what the cost of the boat is, suffice to say that it is well into 6 figures. You can follow Jacob's website for more on the story, including build photos and support. Link: http://www.jacobadoram.com/thebuild/.

Here are some new photos of the Pacific Rowboat. Steve Rander reports that the finished weight of the hull laminate with keel is 490 lbs, which is about 5 lbs. under the target weight from the weight estimate. So we are right on track.

This morning, I approved the copy for the article that will appear in Professional Boatbuilder magazine on Jacob Hendrickson's Pacific Rowboat. It will appear in issue #161, June/July 2016. Watch for it.
