Help needed aspap, motor has no spark

Hey guys,
New to the forum and I just got a 14foot 1961 glassmaster boat. It has a 61, 40hp evinrude and I can't get any spark out of it. If I'm lucky, 1.5(volts?) on my reader. I know there should be much much more and I need someone to give me a checklist or point me in the right direction on where to go and start with the simplest things. Thanks, Tyler

 

Welcome to the forum. The 1st thing you must do is buy a service manual. They are easy to get and you will get the same advice from most on this forum.

 

Is there any way I can get an online one? Is a 1965 the same as my 1961?

 

ignition all the same from Noah's Arc to mid 70's depending on model

can you post some powerhead photos.
Its basically points ignition, 2 points/condensors/coils
wiring to stop it, which shorts to ground so thats a good place to look
Have you had the flywheel off?
Can you confirm the key has not sheared
....

Nvm I figured out how but it won't upload them. Do you want me to take the flywheel out?

 

if you are sure there is nothing wrong with the stop circuit then the next items to check are all under the flywheel

 

I forgot to mention I am new at this stuff could you tell me where it is and how I would test it thanks!!

before we get there you need to eliminate the vacuum switch as well, just take the wire off it and see if you gain spark

 

Testing the kill circuit is always the first step. All you need is a $5 tester or a trouble light.

 

Where is the vacuum switch and kill circuit?

 

Keep in mind this motor is a 1961.

 

I would say buy the book and then come back and ask questions so you have a reference. If you still cannot figure it out take it to a mechanic .
