Can anyone name a single person killed by NOX?

How did it happen?

 

Why? Is there a plan to ban using them? In which countries? Are the owners now suddenly very unhappy with them? They may become unhappy, if the software is fixed and the engine consumes more diesel and has worse performance.

This seems to be a very expensive illustration of the old saying.

 

I guess 1 reason maybe that cars that don't get fixed will deemed unroadworthy in most countries and be put off the road. A car that cannot be registered will not have much value will it.

 

At least in EU, where probably 90% of these 11 million cars are, the manufacture will certainly need to fix the cars, if they otherwise would be put off the road. But I haven't seen anything suggesting that these cars would be illegal to drive. In some countries the selling of some new VW group cars is already prohibited.

I don't think NOx emmission measurement is done for any used cars in any country. Most likely there are lots of used cars that do not comply any more to the limits they were required to comply with.

 

I am sure the australian authoritys will cancel their registration if they do not comply with the regulations for the model year.

 

You are talking like hoyte and fred now. It does not matter if it is right or wrong vw got caught cheating and thats that. Even my kia has a particulate filter and burner. Others have adblue.

Here in Finland we have yearly inspection (starting from third year) of used cars. During it emissions are measured. I haven't owned a diesel car and was surprised to see that only absorption coefficient is measured. For gasoline engines OBD error codes are checked and HC, CO, CO2, O2 and Lambda values are measured all except CO2 having limits. O2 limit is just for detecting a leak.

I think a car would not be banned here, if it passes the inspection. VW group may be forced to offer a free fix to all used cars, but there will be owners who ignore the call and I don't think that will lead to any problems in the inspection untill NOx measurement is included in it.

 

We will have to wait and see what happens. This thread is going to turn into oceans are under attack version 2 so i will bow out for now.

 

Nitrogen oxide quantity is difficult to measure, VW had never used their trick if vehicles would fail the test after 3 years. According to Wikipedia companies like GM and Caterpillar did something similar in the past and had to pay substantial fines.

Here in Croatia the annual inspection for diesel vehicles is a brake test and a picture to prove you were really there. The only exception was when my Fiat Ducato had the ECU warning light on. Then the guy hooked up the exhaust test unit, but found everything OK of course.
Fiat has a different philosophy. Their vehicles comply with all environmental regulations, but they use the cheapest plastic devices they can find. As soon as the warranty period is over, these parts fail or simply fall off.
My Fiat RV needed 10 ltr/100 km. when new, now 8.2 ltr. is enough to move its 3100 kg.

Not really possible , it takes specialized stuff , usually in a lab.
