You are correct. I was unaware of that until this moment. It just shows I am way short of omniscient.

And they use the same engines. Also Skoda and Seat uses the same. Are those sold in the USA?

Some audi models even share the passat floorpan and driveline.

Continuous injection in a big V8 was far from optimal. To maintain idle speed at 700-750 rpm air could only enter the manifold trough a narrow gap under an adjustment screw, so the mixture was very rich. By blowing lots of air in the exhaust a CO level could be reached that would pass the (idle) test.
Under driving conditions the Bosch K-Jetronic system had no such problems, the air pump (with its own air filter!) was just there to pass the test.

Had a few of them from the 70s, VW passat = Audi fox back then nearly exact in driveline with different back end styling, I think equivelencies exist from VW polo to Audi A1 & Golf to A3 but maybe you just get to pay more for your audi..

Ya, cause going back to the heavy smog of the 70's saounds so appealing.

Thanks to this 'feature' VW is estimated to have released an extra 900,000 tons of NO2 in the air every year. Which is pretty close to the combined production of all of the U.K.'s power production and industrial sector combined. This extra NO2 is blamed for an addition 5,000 deaths/year world wide.

But hey, it saved VW customers a couple bucks a year on urea so good for them.

Blamed, okay maybe, but proven? That scenario only happens in areas of dense populations of drivers. Don't complain about overpopulation and then turn around and complain about a very ineffective remedy.

Where do these figures come from?

    The ASQ.ORG website perhaps:
Some specialists estimate that the bogus Volkswagen test results may mean that between 300,000 and 900,000 tons of extra nitrogen oxide (NOx) a year could have been pumped out by VW cars alone, based on average mileage.

Please note the careful phrasing: "some specialists", "may mean" and "could have been" and of course the 1 to 3 spread in estimated amount.
As the page contains much more vague quotes and clearly wrong figures I have serious doubts about this source of information.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_emissions_violations the limit in US was 0.043 g/km and the actual value vas 5-20 times more for Passat and 15-35 times more for Jetta.

So lets say the actual was in the order of 1 g/km more than the limit. 11 million cars and lets say an average 20 000 km/year then we get:

    1 g/km * 11e6 * 20 000 km/year = 220 000e6 g/year = 220 000 tonnes/year. So the order of magnitude is OK.

To get 900 000 tonnes you would need to use the maximum emission measured (35 times = 1.46 g/km more than the limit) and 56 000 km/year. Thus it really doesn't make sence.

I heard on the radio today that vw will survive because germany cannot afford to let it fold with so many employees. There are estimates floating around of up to 25 billion euros to reset the vehicles and pay all the lawsuits. The affected vehicles may have no resale value at all if they don't fix the software. Dealers will not even accept them as trade ins. Which will set off another barrage of lawsuits by the owners. And on top of all that several company executives may be looking at jail time.
