The FAA doesn’t seem too concerned at the prospect of hundreds of newbie pilots flying these vehicles around willy-nilly and have somewhere between $189,000 to $250,000 to spend on an A5, and have a huge garage, your dreams of flying your own amphibious toy.

Your comments to me are promoting "silly hysteria" in your choice of wording which denigrates this aircraft.

The article itself is just another exaggerated sales pitch. Typical.

It is your (Myark) words which suggest there is something wrong with the Government oversight and with "newbie" pilots who's only fault seems to be that they have money.

But if you really accept the article as completely true, you have more of a problem than those who have put down a deposit.

According to Hawkins, the A5 is also built with the “democratization of flying” in mind. That concept goes beyond the Icon A5’s safety mechanisms and car-like instrument dashboard; it also has to do with the license you need to fly the A5. In order to pilot Icon’s little plane—or any of the 130 or so light sport aircraft available—you need a Sport Pilot License. Qualifying for that type of license requires about half the flight time you need to get a private pilot license—a minimum of 20 hours of flight time as opposed to 40 hours—but it also comes with more restrictions. For example, you can only fly during the day, you can only fly two-seaters, you can only fly in nice weather with at least three miles of visibility, and you’re limited to flights up to 10,000 above mean sea level or 2,000 feet above ground level.

Not sure if "willy-nilly" is irritating. I thought it was too and then questioned what willy-nilly means. I looked up the definition:
"without direction or planning; haphazardly." according to http://dictionary.reference.com/
Haphazard means "characterized by lack of order or planning, by irregularity, or by randomness; determined by or dependent on chance; aimless."

I thought it was negative and implied unsafe before I looked it up. Now I think it's actually an accurate description of using these for recreation taking off from lakes and so forth.

 

This is why I tend to stay away from words with more than 4 letters.
