The mystery is only solved when we know the make and type of the engine and the name and type of the ship it was in, plus the location where the engine wreck lies and what happened to the ship and its remains, and what caused the engine to be there all on its own . . .

Those engines are hard to relate to in the normal scale of things. This guy is measuring cylinder wear, there's a partial boot in the upper left corner.

I used to think it was strange being able to crawl into the engine compartment of my truck to work on it, using ladders to get into the engine itself is something else.

That's definitely a two-stroke engine as can be seen by the air intake apertures in the side of the cylinder wall just above where the guy is measuring . . . :)

OK. #MysteryNotSolved ;) Whilst these are not 'the' engine. Perhaps they may lead a clever detective to full disclosure. :) They will raise an eyebrow at the least.

Finnish Wartsila has built the world's largest and most powerful engine. The diesel engine is as high as a four-storied house and has an effect on the outrageous 109 000 horses and turn the unimaginable 7,600,000 Nm.

The engine is a common-rail diesel with 1820 liters with 14 cylinders. A large enough engine of course requires a lot of soup, and the snore itself 271.32 liters per minute. It weighs 2300 tons and measuring 13.4 meters in height and 27.4 meters in length.

The cooker is in the Emma Maersk, one out of the main container ships in the world. An ordinary cargo ships usually have a maximum speed of 18-20 knots, but Emma Maersk peaks throughout 31. The ship is twice as big as the Titanic was and weighs 170 000 tons.

The above 2nd picture of the engine on the lorry behind the Mercedes truck looks to me like a straight 6 and by far not a 14 cylinder . . . .

Sailor Alan made me aware Liberty Ships were widely copied as freighters after WWII, just found someone wrote a book about the Japanese copies -- link -- link -- link --

When looking at this one and some others I don't agree with the general disparage for their appearance and the term ‘‘Ugly Ducklings’’ on the cover . . .

BTW, when looking at the above in 2006 launched Emma Maersk and the 1945 Eastern Trader I see the same style amidships bridge and little to no sheer . . .

I brought the words with the pictures from the source credited at the bottom. What I was unsure of was if this is a modular engine.

True to this thread here is a random shot from my riverboat this last weekend. It could get better, but not by much.
