Just watched a news report about one the biggest drug busts in u s history. 6 tons of cocaine being transported in a semi submersible which later sunk while being towed in. Pretty dumb to employ an ungainly looking 1/2 sub. If they researched this site they could have come up with a kite powered under water train on foils.:D. P.s. I can't post a link with this mobile phone.

I wonder how many get through undetected. Strike rate must be OK to absorb the loss of 6 tons in one go.

The more the coast guard catches the better. Would be dangerous to run into one for normal boaters :( Coast Guard reports 25 interdictions in the Eastern Pacific since 2006.

Well that's a loaded question without a question mark....
Plenty of boatbuilders have built drug running boats without any further knowledge of the facts....
Plenty of drug money has been spent on boats with the builder innocent of the origin of funds.
Those that "design" "secret" compartments/transport/whatever are dealing in corrupt trade.
Those that sweat honestly in creation of vessels used by the perpetrators of evil without further knowledge innocent.....
The swordsmith innocent... the slayer guilty..........

the more successful the authorities are in stopping this nasty stuff getting into the country, the higher the street price, and the higher the incentive to find new ways to smuggle it into the country.

A friend of mine used to work for the FAA where they approved modifications to light aircraft, and there were applications for "storage compartments" in all kinds of odd places in light aircraft. They knew what it was for but there was nothing they could do about it, if they meant all of the regulatory and engineering requirements they had to approve them.

The smugglers would also steal light planes to fly their cargo across the boarder, the DEA got smart with this and bought high speed business jets and equipped them with powerful military radar. One jet could cover a long stretch of boarder, and intercept them and arrange to have federal martials waiting there when they land. the smugglers got cleaver, but added a lot of cost by using two or three stolen aircraft, loading one up with drugs, fly in tight formation right on top of each other, as they cross the boarder (so they appeared as one aircraft on the radar). Once they were detected and a jet was on its way to intercept them, they would split up and fly to different remote ditching places in the desert. Typically the pilot would have to guess which one had the illegal cargo, so the smugglers had a one in three chance of having enough time to unload the ditched aircraft, and drive off to El Paso or Tucson before authorities can check out all of the ditching sites. so they arrest the decoy pilot and deport him to try again later, unless they go lucky and converged on the real plane with the illegal cargo.

It is no surprise they have resorted to submersibles a number of years ago. Because these cartels have the money, likey they could hire engineers and designers to build them better submersibles, or even mini-sealth aircraft, it would lower their costs and risks to have something that is harder to detect. Of course the problem with such a criminal and lawless group, anyone that worked for them would likely be "dispose" of when your work was done. So no amount of money offered would be good enough since there is no way to enforce a contract, even if you were swore to silence and were offered big money, let alone protect your life. So they have to buy former soviet subs, light aircraft, or build their own low tech means to transport their deadly cargo.

There is so much profits at stake, they will be using increasingly more sophisticated way to get their "product" to the US market. This is why they are able to virtually buy off whole police departments in countries south of the boarder.

Legalise drugs and the whole industry will die overnight. Advertising campaigns warning about drug use is more effective than banning them. My kids and all their friends are non smokers where as most of my generation were smokers. This can be attributed to the years of anti smoking campaigns. Most of the bad drugs only became a problem after they were banned.

Money is like water...it seeks it's way through about everything. Making hard drugs legal will not kill the industry overnight.
The only thing that can kill ANY industry is a declining demand for the product., it's as simple as that.

Offer and demand is the only game in town.........

Your right. I should have said it would kill off the illegal trade overnight. Not much profit running legal drugs..

Pharmaceutical drug industry would dwarf the illicit drug trade in $ terms.

    I understand what you're saying.
It's almost impossible to estimate how many billions of dollars are yearly spend on fighting drug crime world wide....would be disastrous for a lot of people with a lot of power if this should end overnight. I'm not talking about the regular customs officers or police detectives, investigators in the field etc... but the big shots who controle the budget(taxpayers money) ....and at the same time give "advise" to the politicians/lawmakers how much money they need next year.....
We would be surprised to learn how much taxpayer money the gov. spend to take 1 kg coke off the market.....now THAT are real expencive drugs !!

May be, but governments love an enemy.
Similar but different is government involvement in gambling, was the time a pub & TAB couldn't be on the same side of the street within a certain distance, now our governments are addicted to gambling taxes/profits & even seem to subsidise billionaires access to prime sites to develop the trade.....

Of course governments love an enemy because that's the only way they can shove all those regulations/laws through our throats....
