    hi,
I am currently got myself admitted to PhD at my native university in the department of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering. My M.Sc thesis was on implementation of Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and I want pursue my PhD research on energy efficiency design index. Is there anyone out there who has dealt with EEDI and researching on this? I am looking for suggestion and guideline to select a nice research topic. Please give me a should whoever is related to EEDI.

What is it you understand about the EEDI and its implications...and for which vessels/markets?

Interesting subject. Private Message sent. Here is an interesting lead where some synergies and opportunities for research might exist. You might also consider combining your previous research in Energy Efficiency and Total Life Cycle Sustainability with the work of Dr. Amartya Sen.

    Adhoc,
    Thanks for your response.

    About EEDI:
In order to control this CO2 emission from shipping, International Maritime Organization, IMO has developed the first ever global CO2 reduction index in the world, known as ‘EEDI’, which has came into force from the 1st January, 2013 for new sea going ships over 400 gross tonnage . The basic formulation of EEDI is based on the ratio of total CO2 emission per tonne.mile. As CO2 depends upon fuel consumption and fuel consumption depends upon the total power requirements, eventually this EEDI formulation has certain impact on ship design parameters and hydrodynamics.

There are some criticism against EEDI that it is contradicting the basic hydrodynamic and physical laws. I want to research on that. Also, I want to optimize ship design in light of EEDI and see whether the optimization contradicts or coincides. I want to go further, since the present EEDI covers only sea going ships, not inland water ships.

The research could go more, which I dont know yet. I need to find a mentor, place, funding, professor......

I have done my M.Sc thesis on EEDI in 2011, right before the adoption of EEDI by IMO. I got myself admitted in our local university and completed mandatory theory courses, but I am feeling that, I am not finding a good research option on EEDI here. If you have any suggestion, please let me know.

    regards,
    manon

manon...I am aware of what the EEDI is, i was enquiring to ascertain your own understanding/knowledge first.

Indeed..and there are other criticisms related to its formulation based upon the power requirements, rather than the engine per se, or the resistance in a seaway for the fw, weather factor, for example. etc. Since the minim power for a seaway...can be related to its emissions and thus directly affect the safety. Since one can manipulate the fw to yield lowest value. But at the expense of the vessels REAL ability to make headway in a real seaway, like a typhoon.

There are many routes you could take with the research.

You could first contact several universities....like Southampton University in the UK. You could obtain a scholarship via LR..as LR fund a lot of PhDs for research that have marine implications and this would be of interest.

I understand your point regarding EEDI. I have been talking with some experts during my M.Sc thesis as well like Professor Stefan Krugar or Germany, Jan Barghold of Sweden. Anyway, do you think that there is a PhD research scope on EEDI? By LR did you mean Lloyd's Register? Can you suggest any professor who is working on EEDI in Southampton University or else?

Nevertheless, thanks for your suggestion, as always.

    regards,

    Yes LR = Lloyd's Register.

Prof Dominic Hudson deals with many issues energy related, im sure he can assist.
