Extreme 40 Circuit changes?!

The challenge I see is in the short course venues close to shore. The wind variation could make the results too random, or too dangerous. I suspect that foiling may lead this series to smaller boats like it did to the AC. Some see foiling as just a speed gain. I see it breaking the link between size and speed. You don't need 40ft to be extreme anymore. 30s are extreme, 20s are extreme. If I succeed there will be extreme 10s.

 

The press release mentions that the boats will operate well in displacement mode for the tighter stadium circuits where foiling is not suitable.

 

About the claim from Clean on SA that the Extreme series may be sailed in GC32s - does anyone here know anything his claim from Clean on SA that "millions" have been spent on the GC32s? It doesn't seem impossible but it really puts the fleet size in perspective.

 

This sounds interesting. I'm sure a lot of us would like to know what you have in mind.

Very close in length to a Moth (extreme 11), but different how ? - maybe a multihull?

That link has been pretty weak for many, many years, and it's been consistently getting weaker. Thirty years ago you could outpace 60' racing cats with a craft less than 13 feet long in many conditions, the 20-25 foot cats would kill the 80' maxi monos, and the F40s were scaring the 60-80 foot multis. Fifty years ago there were popular 17 footers that were quicker than the 66' America's Cup boats. Sixty five years ago there were 20' keelboats that could slide past the 36-45 foot "grand prix" boats of the day. And although it's hard to find details, it's very likely that the Raters and International Canoes of 100 years ago could beat boats three or four times their length.

Funnily enough, in the biggest race for beach cats (the last Texel)all the foilers were beaten by much shorter windsurfers!

Today it was announced that the Extreme 40 racing will be sailed from now on with GC32 Foilers!
