Arvel Gentry's site (www.arvelgentry.com) has been unattended for many years, and it is out of service from 9/2013
I really hope Mr. Gentry is ok and healty, and wish to see him and his site back online soon.

In the meantime I've made a small unofficial blog and uploaded all the articles and papers found in the net, in order to keep them available to the public.

    The blog is here:

    Arvel Gentry

I am Kim Gentry, the daughter of Arvel Gentry.

First, I would like thank you for keeping the web connection for my father. Unfortunately, he passed away on June 1st, 2015 after a battle with Parkinson's.

I am in the process of trying to gather up all of his publications, writings, and contributions. He was a brilliant man and a wonderful father.

I welcome your input and please feel free to contact me.

    Kim,

condolences to you and your family.

It is very nice of you to make contact with this forum, welcome! Are you intending to make all of Arvel Gentry's publications available? That would be really great to allow future generations of both amateur and professional designers to have access to his research and articles so the have a proper foundation to learn and build on can be easily found and studied.

I want to second that motion Kim,...my deepest condolences.

I've made numerous references to your father's work over the years trying to convince some naysayers that the 'slot effect' really does exist, and has such an influence on the two sail's interaction.

And I am really glad for this forum subject's introduction so future readers can have access to the very important work your father contributed. Too many times these days some really important work gets lost in the archives of the internet. Hopefully this subject thread will keep that from happening.

BTW, Mike I think you might have meant to say aerodynamics rather than hydrodynamics?

Kim, I am so sorry to hear such sad news. Your father brought us all to the mysterious world of fluid dynamics, making it understandable (and amusing also!). World of Sailing will remember him with affection.

I'll send you a private message for us to keep in contact.

Thank you all so much for your response on this thread. I will do what I can regarding the publications and a tribute to him.

He asked that his ashes be spread at sea. I am trying to arrange that with Courageous. If anyone can help with that endeavor? I was basically bottle fed on Kittiwake and other boats and continue to sail today. My father and I won many trophies together.

Recently, I won the Blind Nationals in RI as the sighted guide for the blind program called "Sense the Wind".

Again, I thank you all for your input at this difficult time.

Brian, here part of a 1986 "Los Angeles Times" article showing Arvel Gentry involved in hydrodynamics for the America's Cup:
    http://articles.latimes.com/1986-08...silver-ewer-baron-marcel-bich-america-s-cup/4

The article is signed by David Devoss, is pretty large and a good piece for the America's Cup history.

Thanks for that article, very interesting.

BTW, how did you manage to find a 'newspaper article' that old? I've often thought one needed to copy the article onto the forums lest it be lost forever in the big 'sea' of news articles.

    Dear Ms Gentry

My sincerest apologies for any distress caused to you by the malicious posts using my name on the Arvel Gentry thread on Sailing Anarchy. I assure you I had nothing to do with them and have left that forum after accomplishing what I came for. It is a bad place to expect anything other than bad things.

I did not know your father but I do know what it means to lose a loved one.

My sincerest condolences on your loss.

    Dear Kim,

My condolences on the passing of your father Arvel. I had to good fortune to talk to him numerous times over the years. He was a wonderfully insightful scientist, and a much loved and respected mentor.

I have a complete copy of his website archived, which I downloaded several years ago. I also have hard copies of many of his technical papers.
