They are light also, calculated weight coming in under the weight of the original beams plus stainless water stays and associated fittings and fixtures and mounting blocks and associated strengthening so we are very happy with the end result.

Will post weights of New and old when new actually meet calculated weight.

ama weight

I am very interested to know what a finished ama in 4mm weighs. Thanks for all the photos you have posted. It is encouraging for any of us working on our own project to see your progress and it might encourage someone new to jump in and start there own build.

Perhaps if you sent Sam a message he might be able to give you some input on what his beams weighed in at.
Fred seems to have the lead on the build front.

I have one ama completely coated with 4oz cloth and epoxy. I will weigh it tomorrow and post result.
and, to anyone contemplating a buc build: Just do it! It is not hard, just time-consuming. I have been enjoying it some much that I'm already contemplating a buc 28 next!

 

Yeah, bucc looks like a nice straight forward build, can't wait to see it all done! And I envy you for being able to do it right now. I had plans to crank out a kraken then slowly build major part for the bucc but then my dad had a heart attack Jan, he's ok now, but it puts a damper on things trying to pick up some slack for him. To add insult to injury my parents are also my day care, so been tough on the business front as well. This week alone I should be out working but have to rebuild a sunroom for them that sprung a leak, so i have less time and have to pay my guys more to do what I could have. Luckily my build area has been all prepped! So when things ease up I can take to task.

Yes, it's a huge commitment of time. Today I'm taking a late lunch to put one coat on top of one hull, so after work I'll put on second, then before bedtime I can do third.

Take care with the glass cloth and epoxy. Too easy to be carried away and needlessly add extra weight and extra cost too.

 

I weighed one float. 138 pounds. I weighed each end while standing on a scale, subtracted my weight from each end and added them together.i suppose thats how you do it. Does it sound heavy? What are they supposed to weigh?

 

Heck even paint can be overkill! Was amazed ripping apart a rotten leaking sunroom that the boards I just pre painted before assembly, ie all individually encapsulated, were in fine shape even in contact with concrete and water yet those uncoated and on a tin tray were rotted. Amazing what a total coat of even paint will do, now imagine epoxy. I knew between spinklers and rain I wanted it protected so I basically cut out all the parts to build it then soaked them in paint, ends and all,then assembled it. It all survived amazingly well! Just didn't know 25 years later my dad would add 1/2 slate tile outside making it effectively below ground. At that no matter how well it's made water always finds a way. Most powerful solvent on the planet! Just look at the Grand Canyon.

Grab yourself a sportsman scale, they have em on up
To 700 pounds for cheap. I use them for just such occasions
When something is either heavy or akward to weight, like engines and such.
Check amazon or depot or eBay. There good as well for determining loads.

138 lbs or 62.72 kilos sounds pretty good to me. I know painting a bicycle frame can add a couple hundred grams to the weight, I wonder how much the paint will add on an ama?
Maybe Os7 or Sam knows.

I know it's not a B24 (but it's an alternative, ha) but Sid's single, but 8 metre long (wide actually) main beam, built in 3 and 4 mm ply, with a box beam core and airfoil shaped skin, glassed, weighed 46 kgs.

 

I weighted two months ago a Nacra 5.8 hull (1989) at 61 kg. I will use as outrigger on my Strike 20. I find it quite heavy. I think a Tornado hull is 45 kg.
