Generic Advice For New Boat Designs and Designers

"But Mr Toms added: ‘We’re just two lads who were bored and wanted to make a boat – why not? It’s better than going out and doing drugs and committing crime." Refute that. To me, if true, that's the most important part of this story.

What gets me, if I didn't make it clear before, is the lunacy of even including something so stupid and cartoonish in the conversation about 'boat design'.

Just think for a moment about one of your nonsensical know-it-all and a priori statements:

"The oar broke not because it was badly made - but because it had too much pressure applied for its design load." So, just EXACTLY how do you know that? That sort of reasoning sets my teeth on edge and because I have a personality defect, am compelled to challenge it for the nonsense it is.

The problem wasn't the chosen oar. The problem started way before they even conjured the idea, and continued on through the launch.
No life jackets and one unable to swim? Unable to SWIM, and embarking on a fishing trip in an untested craft in frigid waters with no safety equipment beyond a cellphone.

No, the real problem was at least one chap trying to run well before he'd even tried to walk, and then expressing a desire to go do it again.
As previously mentioned, that's a pending Darwin Award nominee right there.

    Yofish,
    We love that stuff..
Part of everyday banter........ & looks great in a report..

"Loaded beyond it's capacity to withstand the extent of forces applied to it..."
    = pi$$weak
    "Structural integrity has been compromised.."
    =effin busted

I like your "compelled".... -- "Top Gun" quote.......... "A good pilot is compelled to always evaluate what's happened, so he can apply what he's learned.............." That's the one to use on the boss when something went a little wrong- just insert occupation in place of pilot..........

I will put my hand up for that - Yofish was just quoting it.

    So then
when i say "but because it had too much pressure applied for its design load."

    Yofish converts it to ..

"Loaded beyond it's capacity to withstand the extent of forces applied to it..."

Moaning moan about preciseness, then re-writing the original quote to make the case look better. That's a severe personality defect.

Sure - there are some assumptions - they could have broken the oar hitting each other over the head.

But, based on years of paddle and oar experience, I am pretty confident that the bulky, non-streamlined shape of their craft, combined with their weight and possibly some water in the bottom - is NOT what the lightweight aluminium paddle was designed to withstand.

Would anyone have suggested those paddles as propulsion for such a craft ? At minimum, some solidly built dinghy oars seem way more appropriate.

    Hi RW,

I think we're both semi quoted there......;)

Truly, I do need to report stuff up the chain of command & use similar terminology.... but we do joke about it just being busted!

The referenced "voyage" was poorly conceived & the paddles ..weak, on a pond or with a lightweight vessel would be ok.

    Apologies for thread drift..

I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone or perhaps the Star Wars Bar. I'm smiling now to all, in my best Woody Allen way, as I locate the exit with my back and slooowly sidle towards it grinning as I quietly mention to Il Duce that I merely cut and pasted his EXACT words into my reply and did in any way conive to say - Yofish converts it to .."Loaded beyond it's capacity to withstand the extent of forces applied to it..."

Gentleman, this has become supremely stupid and I'm on the verge of being embarrassed for us all and hope my children are not watching.

    No more from me.

Yes, I agree but love the entertainment and seen many other similar stuff first hand.
Perhaps a new topic header is in order.

Plenty of new designers popping up - maybe this thread should move up the list a bit ?
