FC also would facilitate making it a semi or fully submersible craft, which, if you'll pardon the scope creep, would greatly improve its open ocean handling if you didn't have to put up with bobbing on the waves. It already has the right shape....

It might be difficult to install a snorkel long enough on such a boat to get you out of the area near the surface where turbulence still reigned.

Speaking of project creep, just in a completely different direction, one could build in FRP, stretch the hull, build two, and have the foundation for one heck of a live aboard motorsailer cat, riding relatively high in the water compared to the boat in the OP as it undoubtedly would. A lighter built third spindly football could form the bridge deck accommodations with nice cockpits fore and aft. I'd go for sails on the hulls, four masts, two each, either modernized crab claw or junk rig, just to complete the whole contrariness of the thing. Oh, and bulbous plexiglass skylights/hatches (as required) ... can't forget those.

Another option is go to roswell and buy an ex martian spacecraft hull and repair the flat spot where it hit the ground. May already have its own propulsion system but service manual will be hard to come by.

It's a fun romp of a movie. No deep meaning of life stuff plus one unrepentant hippie.

Another direction could be to expand the concept inwardly, much in the style of Matryoshka Babushka doll where extra hull, dinghy & even a pair of floating sun lounges pop out of the mother egg.........

Aaahh......... heading ashore in Babushka boat... champagne bottle as a paddle... palm trees waving over squeaky sand............

    Ideas for forming the shape:
Build footballish shape from developable panels as posted earlier. These panels are flat in one dimension and thus not very attractive. To solve this seal the hull, fill it with water and hook a consumer pressure washer to it... With such massive panels 100 bar pressure (even way less) will have huge force to stretch the steel.
Or fill with water and freeze it...

Both methods above are used for making diy exhaust expansion chambers for 2-stroke engines.

Considered hydroforming but have since decided to covert an old gas tank to a boat :p

You'll need to reinforce it on the inside because they are designed to resist outward pressure (I would suggest a geodesic framework) and also have to add a keel and floors as a backbone.

But one huge caution: if it was ever used for fuel storage be sure to clean it out spotless before you do any work in it. There have been more than a few incidents of men dying or being injured because residue a tank flared up as they were working in them.

Just needs a conning tower and torpedo tubes. I would use an old milk tanker. Then you would have a food grade stainless steel boat.. just strip the outside skin off and insulation.

Nice one, we've got past the Buck Rogers version & into the Starwars model, looks like you need a co- pilot as well..
