    Hi all

I am after a new Yanmar 1GM10 or Nanni 10 but no dealers list their prices.

Anyone have a rough estimate what these engines cost?

    Thanks

Try calling them... or email, I'd throw WM, Diecon & Beta into the mix too.

Marine diesels always look exxy, especially when you compare to a tractor with similar hp.

$8K to $12K depending on manufacturer/options. I like the Bukh 10HP motors myself but you won't be able to afford one.

IF you are handy , finding a common diesel for non marine purposes and marinizibg it or using it with dry stack and keel cooling is the true low coat alternative.

Your local Reefer (big truck refrigeration ) shop will have lots of used engines at a great price. A used tranny with a NEW drive plate and off you go.

In larger sizes a premium engine like a John Deere can be had from the farm folks factory rebuilt at about 1/3 the price of a marine unit.

Money saved will allow a commercial (like twin disc) tranny instead of a budget yacht gear.

Deere Engines, without considerable messing about, are not that suitable
reason being, they have the engine mtg, tappings low in the block, making it difficult in boats with no headroom in engine spaces
I looked at them for new builds, stayed with Deutz
Au is not like USA, there are few places, or none, you would find used reefer engines

There are refrigeration workshops in every state of aus with old reefer units laying around. Plenty of them must have good running engines in them. Do you think we transport our food at room temperature. :D. If john deere are a bad choice for marine use don't tell all the john deere marine owners or american marine owners out there. P.s I am talking about ref semi trailers not train carriages.

Where exactly did I say they were a bad choice, I just pointed out a fact re eng mtgs
I fitted a few, they are a good motor
plus have you any idea how many hrs a refridgeration motor clocks in one year ?they are trash whgn biffed out and small engines do not rebuild as they are bored in block

The basic engines are so cheap for the reefer repair guys that replacing is very common , and takes less time than trouble shooting and repair.

You might simply purchase an new engine from them.

The oil pans are HUGE , as the US units have to run a week with no maint .

You stated john deere are not suitable for boats. Read your own posts. I agree about the reefers to a certain extent but good ones are around if you look hard enough.

I said they were not suitable as sold for Engine rooms lo headroom
I will not get into a bun fight with someone who APPEARS to have little engineering experience and who clearly seems to wish to nit pic
therefore, to save us both agro, you are on ignore
    Have a happy day
Fast Fred, yes you are onto it
Besides who knows how to bore an engine these days, apart from specialist shops
The min would be Rings brgs, maybe a new crankshaft

Sorry . I did not realize your words were law and must not be questioned. Of course you need a specialist machine shop to bore a block. they are engine reconditioning shops. And he reckons I don't know anything. :D:rolleyes::mad::eek:

When getting marine engines rebuilt , I prefer to use what is known as a Speed Shop.

These are the folks that will build up engines for race cars.

Most have decades of experience and can do a far better rebuild than just a std auto or truck machine shop.

Extras like balancing the crank and checking it for straightness are very worthwhile.

As is having the rods balanced end for end, and the pistons made to weigh the same.

The care they take might not make the engine operate many thousands of hours extra (PM and good oil do that) but,

the smoothness and lack of on board vibration make up for any extra cash spent , and the good news lasts till the next rebuild , many thousands of hours away.
