:D Be patient and let the boat speak for it self, and then you can reassess the situation as to my wellbeing and possible outcome. :D

Eh Manie, what kind of a chap are you that do not remind your "friends" it's your birthday ? LOL, or did you forget ;)

    Happy birthday, many more boats.

Regarding the unhappy wife, I'd be unhappy too if I was married to someone THAT old :D
BUT, seeing you do this old age thing and still have the girls RUN from you certainly is an inspiration, and a motivation for the rest of us that it can be done.

My younger brother is a grandpa already , he sleeps with a GRANDMA every night . I never want to get THAT old. Although at times I feel older than that, like we went hunting a while back, the walking and stalking had me wonder WTF are you up to walking all this distance... and then the thought comes - the worst that can happen is you can die, and what a relief that would be :D

One tip regarding them running girls, you should look at them in doubles or triplets, they feel much less afraid if they don't take something so overwhelming on alone... :D

My innigste simpatie met jou hoee ouderdom... gelukkig moet jy slim wees om so 'n groot getal te kan onthou, en sou jy vergeet, daar sal wel altyd een of ander lae gemene blixem wees wat jou herhinder...

    Amen Brutha !

The famous line in Manies blog " Function above form, functionality as the keyword"

BUT - In boats, Form IS Function !

Without resorting to pejoratives, does anyone else see the differences between the hull designs ? One of them actually sails.

So have rafts of logs, beer barrels, and coconut shells.

The term sail is relative - I include the ability to

    1) be able to make efficient progress to windward,
    2) be easy to steer for hours on end,
    3) be fast enough so I don't run out of water or starve to the next port.

none of which Manies hull will be capable of, or half the photos you posted.

    Square riggers discovered the world.

They dont win yacht races but they do cross oceans via prevailing winds and currents.

Sailing is sailing if it has a sail.

Square riggers did discover the world - at great cost in time, human lives and loss of ships.

We used to use horses too - they created civilisation.

The thing with a horse is, if it wont go where you want it - you can walk the road yourself.

With a boat, not being able to claw your way off a lee shore, taking months instead of weeks to get to the destination so you run out of food, or becoming so fatigued from constant steering that you run on a reef ( name the most recent solo sailor to do that ) - and its fatal.

If you merely want a machine to punish yourself for all your evil ways - build a boxy square rigger and go to sea. If you want to go somewhere safely - get a decent hull and rig design.

Fact of the matter is that we have heard all these arguments in discussions for the past 8 years since the original AIT web site was started. Since then many new developments were experimented with and many highly experienced sailors and yacht designers have been consulted. Tank tests have been performed and many other avenues have been explored and experimented with. The real world tests gave us the confidence to proceed with this project. Every point of concern that has ever been raised has been addressed and we are satisfied that that our design can overcome these concerns. We don't claim that our hull design is unique, in fact it is quite old school.

As I've said before the boat and build will speak for itself.

The one point of interest that will help to make people understand more is that this is a big budget project, we are not cutting corners and the equipment that is going into this boat is new appropriate good stuff.

And yes you can buy a second hand yacht at a third of the price what we are spending on this TEN. Innovation regardless of what it is, is very expensive.

And finally above all, we are having fun. Complicated, intense, adrenaline fuelled fun. Why climb the mountain? Because it's there!

With all due respect to your knowledge and experience but do you really think you have so much influence on Manie that he is going to stop this project because of your comments ?
    .....Dont think so....:D

And just to refresh everybody's memory this is where we are going with the hulls. THREE steering options 1) manual from inside the boat 2) Raymarine ST1000 tiller pilot 3) Windvane as Rory used on Cookie around the world catamaran.

Me either - maybe the faint hope that he will stop pouring money into this totally woeful hull sgape and re-start with a properly designed hull, even if it IS under ten foot.

I made and supported some caustic comments about the size of the boat for the job earlier on, but then I never realized that the hull design would be so bad as well.

I thought at least he would start with a hull design that wouldn't drag its sorry little *** like a duck with diarrhea with the sailing (pointing reaching AND running) ability of coconut. There is NO rig that would make this abomination sail well - square, triangular or oval !

Sure - the design "speaks for itself" - without even being in the water its yelling loud and clear "designed by someone with zero sailing experience"
