This sounds like a camper with adjustable width pontoons or hulls.

Click my handle for my gallery for my modular cat concept.

It would use generic beams for easy config to any width.

Although I only show holes in the beams and bolt stubs on the decks, and that wouldn't allow for sliding, just fairly easy assembly before setting out, it wouldn't take too much imagination for a sliding version.

Others are right about the sever weight penalty when you start adding lots of heavy hardware (if its going to have any degree of strength/safety).

My concept isn't designed to win any sailing races against real sailing cats, but to ofter a pre-engineered Platform (both "flat work area" and marketing-speak) for general use, and especially for folks who are more interested in land-lubber style working/living space than snazzy boating.

I'd summarize it differently, Ad Hoc ate a case of lemons for breakfast, not for the first time !

You can mix and match as much as you like...but taking the OPs question and juxtaposing it against a completely different question with an answer raised by another, just looks like what it is....unrelated. One asking about a sliding mechanism, another not understanding the implications of a one line statement about L/D ratio to an an SOR.

The point of this being..??

If you call a precise, rational analysis of the project trolling or lemons, then I am bemused, brother ... totally bemused !!!

Ad Hoc would be on my board of designers anytime, to cut out the waffle and wasted bandying of words over a discussion. eg. 10 people thinking they have the one concept firmly in their minds, discussing its merits, when its really ten different concepts.

    eg

    "Black Hat:
Using black hat thinking, look at all the bad points of the decision. Look at it cautiously and defensively. Try to see why it might not work. This is important because it highlights the weak points in a plan"

If he brings the same overbearing approach evident here, to your panel of designers, you might get yourself a mutiny !

Well, if that means one less charlatan sprouting religious mysticism subverted for engineering, great :D

    Overbearing - maybe.

Could be expressed more simply and in more detail ? Sure !

    Rational - absolutely.

It makes perfect sense - you may want to re-read the comments again .. slowly Mr E.

Reminds me of Bob Newharts famous gag.

"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'."

I am having trouble reading back past "charlatan sprouting (sic) religious mysticism". Not sure what the "genesis" of that little gem is !

It's all a matter of hats

It's just a matter of which colour hat is needed...

It's blue hat's job to steer the use of hats.... I'm sure we could colour code posts in line with hat thinking..... the thing is that all hats are important at different times....... & some people have favourite hats... I wear a blue hat but like red.... others see me as a black...... my job is very white hat but often I need to project yellow hat.......... green hat is hard;)
