Block stern tube hole in grp boat

Hi I need some advice, Im doing a project boat grp that had an inboard engine but i want to convert it to outboard engine. I have removed the shaft and stern tube but would like to know the best process to block or seal up this hole in the hull.

There's a few ways to do this, but the best is to make a plug of laminate ('glass and goo), thick enough to prevent water from penetrating the tube.

 

I have used a wood plug first, and then laminated the end.

 

Hi thanks for the advice i was thinking of making a wooden plug for it and then fibre glassing it in was just wondering is there another better method. Did you have any problems with leaks after doing yours that way/

 

Pretty standard, bop in a tapered wooden plug, saw off, quick smooth up & grind to perimeter & add some resin & fiber to satisfaction.... sand & fair... story over & reversible.

The ticket with this type of thing, is to have enough laminate to prevent water from getting in the tube. You can use your aunt Millie's mash potato salad as a plug, so long as there's sufficient laminate over the exposed end, to keep out pressurized water.
