I like the half models the shipwrights used to make to take the lies off.

When did mankind start doing graphical representations of reality ?. They had not to wait for the appearance of writing.

Of course, pictures are worth a thousand words.

I'd like to see how the boats built today, purely by eye are lofted, unless they follow secret markings on the floor..........

Probably they do that, but I don't understand that precisely something done properly, they hide.

    TD,

Of course boats have been built for thousands of years before writing was invented. That's not the point at issue. I would suggest that as soon as there was a need for a navy, an organised society would soon produce more permanent records of the designs of ships it needed. The Romans were meticulous in keeping records.

Caligula was a bit of a lad as we say in England.

Amongst other sets of plans I have, I purchased a set of plans for the LYS from Walter Baron. The outline of the sides of the skiff were shown as were the measurements at each station. A bit like Captain Buddy Cannady's plans on pieces of plywood & the building jigs he used.

Walter Baron also provided printed building instructions & once one skiff is finished it would be simplicity itself to keep on building, without forgetting to send $60 for each additional skiff to Walter.

However, Vicems are built by in wood by Turkish craftsmen & it is self evident that they work with written instructions.

Gonzo, you're in a hole. The best thing for you to do is stop digging. You are trying to defend the indefensible. Experienced boat builders can construct seaworthy boats with which they are familiar without constantly referring to the instructions, but that won't do in the litigious society that exists in the first world. I'm sure you'll be familiar with these markings.

I refused to accept it but after all this discussion I may have to admit that someone stands to build boats without plants. What I can not understand is that person has an interest in others know.

Pericles: why I am in a hole? This thread is about sharing information with other people that have experience in building without plans. If some like you and TANSL don't like, that is fine. However, there is no need for you to insult or degrade shipwrights that produce serviceable boats of refined design. Perhaps those who have never met illiterate craftsmen have not left the Western World. In third World countries, reading and writing are not as widespread. They still need things built, so they simply build them.

Gonzo, again, and are too many times, you're wrong and misrepresent what others say. I like very much what you write, I enjoy a lot. Nobody here is insulting anyone or despising anyone. I admit that what you say is true, I can hardly believe it but I admit. What happens is that, if true, it seems pretty useless. I respect even what you say you do, which can give you an idea of how big it is my tolerance.
    Be happy, Gonzo, enjoy life.

You are out of touch with the general population. Google 'illiteracy in America'.

I started this thread to share information with other shipwrights that have experience on building without plans. To those of you that find it useless and are insulted, please stay away and let us exchange useful information.

Gonzo, I have repeated several times, nobody here insulting anyone, only some do not see your reasoning appropriate and, in one way or another, we tell you. Thinking that what you say is wrong is not to insult.
It would be interesting to count how many professionals there answering your questions to say that, indeed, they built without plans. And while we are here, some of us (at least one,me) would like to know why to build without plans is a source of pride.
