Welcome to the forum, fellow Floridian.

The first two books should be "The Nature of Boats" (Geer) and "Understanding Boat Design" (Brewer). Once you've adsorbed these two, you will not be ready to design, but will have a fair idea of the things you need to know and, more importantly, you'll know if you want to go further, into the more complex aspects of design work. If so, "Elements of Yacht Design" is the natural choice.

You will get plenty of good advice here, unless your boat is a train-carrying submarine, which has been declared out of bounds ! :D

MacNaughton's Yacht Design School has a reasonable course on designing boats using Rhino: http://www.macnaughtongroup.com/cadcourse.htm

Principles of Yacht Design is intended as a textbook on sailboat design, and the 4th edition includes a chapter on planing boats
