Very common and very practical. That one is a bit better made than what most of the rock jocks come up with. Half of the USFS seasonals live in those. If you have an 8' truck bed, you can have the last 16" or so as a removable camp kitchen, and then you can open the drawer in the rain.

Eventually, though, after six or seven years in one, you just want more space, and score one of these beauties -

 

I know what you mean. I raised a family of 6 in one of these, but as you say, they just become somewhat claustrophobic.



Now in retirement I have found my dream home.

 

They need to hang a pop-up camper off the front for counter balance.

As a guest room.

Also need a bumper sticker that says "Caution: Oversteer a Tatra Would Envy"

wear ear plugs... kinda noisy process but it works.
