    Ha,

I have just opened a thread about this kind of propulsion but it is with electric motor. Pivoting a diesel engine would be a bit difficult but not impossible. The one point of contact with the deck will have to be damn strong to hold 500 kg...

Sonny Miller has been making some of those. There is a steel frame that looks like a tuning fork. It pivots at the transom and has a worm screw or hydraulic adjustor in the forward part.

I'm afraid I find this something of a weird thread....

If you really want to prove the worth of your engine you have to do comparative test, using two boats, identical except for the engines. The Etech/Yamaha tug of war and "hole start" tests are good examples.

Many people would include towing in "all purpose boating". Certainly a bass boat might do 60knots and then troll at 1 or 2. I assume that your engine can be equally efficient at both jobs and will be better than the combination big outboard plus electric trolling motor that a bass boat uses.

And so why not go to a bass boat competition and prove it??

and forgetting about engine types, their relative efficiency etc, what do you mean by an "all purpose boat"??

Forget efficiency. If anyone can design and build an all purpose boat, he'll get rich.

Which boat propulsion system is the most efficient for all purpose boating?

What most efficient purpose boating means is to compare each propulsion system, the cost to purchase, reliability, fuel, loss of HP from motor to prop, being able to operate in shallow water or infested weed areas, driven onto beach, simplicity “direct drive with no gearbox”, DIY maintained and so on.
That’s some ideas to compare with each propulsions system.

Toms propulsions system is an all-purpose boating as it has the preference of a jet boat but does not lose horse power and can be used in weed infested regions as can have the power of a direct shaft drive and is less cost and maintained than a stern leg and less cost to out boards that can not drive over sand banks logs etc. the list of benefits for an all-purpose boating goes on
Here is link example of all purpose fishing boats to compare for common sense understanding

    http://www.discoverboating.com/buying/boat/all-purpose-fishing-boats
These boats can carry a family or just a couple of buddies on rivers and lakes, freshwater and saltwater, for everything from panfish to big game.

An all-purpose fishing boat can come with a car-like steering wheel or with a steering (and throttle) lever called a tiller on the outboard motor.

Would you like to invest in my project with me.

I tried Google Sony Miller pivoting drive and got no results. Have you a website
    gonzo.

Thank`s to boatdesign.net and it`s great sponsors if you Google Pivotal Drive,
cam.a.propulsion, and search boatdesign.net website you should see a lot of information and discussion on trimmable shaft drive for power boats. Google in Images too for pictures. I would be surprised if you can not find what you want. Try Smart Drive for boats on www.youtube.com
This is a weird thread and I am amazed you have not done that already if you want information.

Thank`s gonzo interesting at CAL500.com website.

Hello yodani, Why would you want to pivot a big diesel engine when you can simply just pivot the much lighter shaft drive, and much quicker.

If you pivot only the shaft, you have to install u-joints, thrust bearings, etc. Also, if the engine tilts it is always aligned with the thrust.

I give up gonzo I thought you were starting to understand after 7 years but it does not look like you will ever understand simple mechanics.

    thrust bearings

2013/14 CAL500 SERIES 8 SURFACE DRIVE. FRESHLY REDESIGNED. EVEN MORE SIMPLE TO MAINTAIN.

These surface drives can damage the rudders on ground as they do not adjust up or down the same as they say the biggest downsides to their surface drives are that they make docking more challenging because they lack the blade surface of a submerged prop and that they extend well aft of the hull, sticking out like appendages. But when you’re in search of speed and efficiency, looks aren’t everything.
However Toms design can be adjusted at any depth as well raise rudder and prop well above the water line, also can run direct of motor like a jet unit keeping simplicity at its best.

CAL500 are not made for the all purpose boating and I would say cost a fortune to purchase.

Well tom seems like each time I mention a real problem, you start with personal attacks instead of justifying your position. How are you going to pivot a shaft without some kind of joint? Show me what "simple mechanics" I am missing.

I'm sure he did, because in his old website, which has now changed (he is no longer designer), he said he was a designer.

Correction: Gonzo did not say literally that was a designer but he offered, among other services, design.
