    Humm, how about tiny drone(s) holding tall a cable longer than your mast, cable to be dangling in water and holding position about 75 feet away? Or some variation thereof...

    Yes, why not a balloon. :) As long the cable is from copper and the drone "lightning proof".

    In all seriousness. A thick copper wire in the center of the mast straight to the base plate, is something what could be realistic. Even if the aluminum mast becomes the parallel resistance to the copper wire and reduce the resistance even further. Bert

    Yes, I was joking about the drone, inspired by Amazon having just delivered its first package by drone...

    Balloon would be better except that a 3 point anchor would be required due to shifting winds. Perhaps a propulsion kite with insulated string and separate cable to the water... etc....

    YES!

    Lightning does not do 90deg turns easily so the bolt can continue down to the keel with an aluminum mast..

    In Fl where some days there are 4000 strikes PER HOUR , the best seems to be a heavy copper wire lead down from the masthead via the outboard shrouds.

    From there a heavy flex wire goes to a clean submerged copper plate .

    IF wires must be joined bolted copper nuts and bolts are needed , no SS.
