Van De Stadt Galapagos 50?

Would this be a worthy boat for circumnavigation or are there any caveats I'm not seeing?

Reportedly built in 1996 by Loedeman Elburg yard.
I can not find the design in van de stadts catalogue.

Maybe they forgot they deigned it or it's something else with a mullet extension & relabelled as an "model" Galapagos.
Sometimes one offs get referred to after a more famous/successful designer also.

Looks comfy though.

It's not a VDS design, it's French, design/build by someone or something called Divergie......

Apparently Jacques Duvergie worked with Michel Bigoin on various designs including Pen Duick V.

 

Brixvold--with that reverse transom it wouldn't be my choice for the following seas of the roarin fourties. Catch a good one and kiss that solid dodger goodby. From that substantial entrance way it looks like others also had similar thoughts. The sistership posted by Waikikin in post #4 would be more in line with what I would consider a better blue water craft with a more traditional transom and a superstructure aft that has following sea deflecting qualities, providing of course those ports are up to snuff.

Apparently I have a lot to learn when it comes to mislabeling of boats, and what a proper stern entails :b


I take it most of you would agree with a more classical approach to a bluewater vessel?
Something like a steel Colin Archer?
I'm debating cons and pros between a C.A. and something like a 90's Van de Stadt.
So far my only concern with the C.A. would be the manoeuvrability.

 

Dittos to what Viking North said, and also too much glass area for heavy weather.
I do like it though, looks very comfortable, especially on deck.

 

Caveats:

You are being asked for (considerably) more money than you will get for scrap on a steel boat coming up for 10 yrs old.



I have lost count of the idiots who are happy to drop $ 100,000 + to buy a boat on the say so of a"surveyor" who then tells them he has no insurance so tough **** but don't worry as we'll put it back on the books for 10% commission and while you're waiting can I introduce you to my girlfriends sister.

So if you are serious about buying over here bring someone you can trust to know what they are talking about and can do a proper survey. The surveyor will love the holiday and at worst you lose a couple of grand you can put down to experience.

Cheap considering the alternatives.
