Sail design software

There are not many free tools available for the design of sails, and none of them allow the user to define its own sail profile. For this reason I started making one of my own that I just finished.
More than a tool it is an addon to an existing 3d design free tool called Blender.

To introduce it and provide all the necessary links and tutorial there is a web page at

The tool is completely free.

If you are interested in sail design and you can not afford a professional tool, you might want to have a try at this one.

Excellent! I will plan on using it later when I get to that point, do not have time to use it now. I will try it later, and give you feed back when I have a chance to play with it with my new concept sail I have been thinking about building for my dingy to give it a try.

 

Perfect timing, I'm just starting work on the redesign of my keelboats rig having modified the hull. I shall down load and try your software tonight.

Interesting stuff, many thanks for posting it! I don't have anything to design a sail for at the moment, but surely will get to thinking on it. And if anyone has any tips on sails along the lines of a Code-0 I'd surely be interested + appreciative.

In the meantime, I look forward to seeing what some of you guys come up with. And I hope I'm not going off topic, but as an FYI, sometimes it makes sense, fiscally, to recut an old or bigger sail into what you want. Aside from local lofts, there are places like www.Minneysyachtsurplus.com and www.Baconsails.com If naught else, it's cheap(er) canvas to practice your stitching & handwork on/with.

Also, you can compare the dimensions of your rig to some of the one-design classes. Sometimes racers will either scrap, or part with sails for cheap, which the rest of us would consider to still have some life left in them. Be they either in need of a recut, or they're a close fit for your boat.

Issue with the installation of SailFlow

In the repository of sailflow in Git I have added a number of other files that are necessary for fpdf to work.
The youtube instructions are outdated in this sense.

In the same directory where you copy fpdp.py you should also copy fonts.py, php.py and ttfonts.py.

A new version of sailflow is in the repository. The flattening of the sail panel works better and the stress relief is highly optimized, to the point that there is no reason to not use it all the time. The PDF print now is improved with the possibility to print on a custom paper size.
The profiles can have applied now a parabolic decrease of lift, which according to books is the characteristic of a minimal drag profile.
I just finished the first sail that looks great. I have made a scale version on paper before going for the full size product.
