Here's a puzzle for you ole' timers. Any idea what this tool might have been used for? My Dad picked it up at a yard sale with some other old woodworking tools.



It says 'The Gipe Patented' but no year.



The only thing I could think of was maybe a swaging tool or something to do with cabling and the like. I'm guessing 1920's or 30's vintage.

Holy Geez! I forgot about you guys over here! It's been awhile since I posted any updates. Sorry.

Had a kid in for a few days helping with the sanding on the keel. Nice to have some help from time to time especially with all the climbing etc.



Pretty much finished up the fairing and have started to seal the hull with epoxy. Here I've tinted it blue to help see the defects. There's a few. Small ones though. They'll be addressed as I go.



The heavens have opened up today and it's raining in my shed. Everythings soaked so no worky today.

Today I went over the area I coated with epoxy yesterday. I first took the shiny stuff off with the RO then hit it with the Flexicats. Both 80 grit.



You can see the big shiny spot running down the hull. That's a low area. You can't see it and you couldn't feel it. I'm glad I did it this way. I now know more of what I'm up against. Overall I'm very happy with the way it's turning out. I may actually get a decent looking hull after all (if I don't screw it up).

I got an early start, 07:00 this morning. I knew I was in for a long day.



The plan was to get one complete coat on the keel & bottom panels before it got too hot. I didn't make it. By noon I was wasted. Only made it about 2/3's of the way around.



Took me almost 2 hours just to wipe the keel & bottom down before I started. This is one freakin' big boat!

So technically the hull is now waterproof!

That bald spot on the stbd side got coated this morning and I worked my way around the bottom panels so they got their second coat. I'll go out this evening when it's a little cooler and hit the stbd side bottom again and try to get a second coat on the keel from the step ladder with an extension handle.



Been a tough slog without my shop helper. Nobody said this was gonna be easy. Just an overwhelming amount of real estate that's gotta be covered. I have to say I am more than pleased with the way it's turning out.

 

Oh look! I got that part sanded!

Done sanding the boat. Wiped it down this morning in prep for primer. Got a Rain Delay now!

Looks like we have 5 or 6 days of rain in the forecast. Temps in the low 60's & humidity through the roof. I can't spray the primer in these conditions. The shed roof leaks! *sigh* That will definitely have to get fixed when the boat has been flipped.

Until the weather clears I'll start work on the Gin Pole & rigging. I picked up all the hardware I'll need yesterday. The lumber for the rolling frames was delivered the day before.

Standby.

 

Hey! I never thought of using one of those little hand-held thingy's to get a boat sanded...

I'm awed. You are functioning as you work. Looks gooder each time I see it.

 

You don't even need an app. Just set the phone on vibrate and stick on a self adhesive sandpaper. Have all your friends call and you are all set.

 

Oh you guys crack me up! Hey! A smart phone sanding app. Glad I thought of it! I'll be rich!

Well we did manage to get a lil' break in the weather so I decided to give this spray painting primer thing a go. I made a mess. I don't think HVLP & high build barrier coat primer work too well together. The spray pattern was tiny, about 2-1/2" wide. Took forever to get about a quarter of the way around the boat so after lunch I switched to the roller and it went much faster.

I know it looks blue in the picture but it's not, Thank Gawd!!!

Still have one more gallon to put on tomorrow. That'll give me two full coats on the hull. I'll be out of primer so that's gonna have to do for now. Took me about 3-1/2 hours and I don't know how many climbs up the step ladder! Oh I need a hot shower & a siesta!
