Rockcliffe, Solway Firth, the islands are Rough Island and Hestan Island. Dad's family was from Newcastle and I have a few images of the area from about 1860 through 1935. My Parent's wedding present was a large watercolor of Rough Island. I think the frame is probably worth more than the painting, though.

Ah - yes - like it says in the corner of the postcard! I'd taken 'Rockcliffe' to be the name of the publisher!

Oh, Well played, Sir! You nailed it absolutely! :D

Did Ben Nevis give it away? I'm guessing you're a bit familiar with the area.

the picture of the white cottages is at the North end of the island.

Next clues were going to be about the history of quarrying on the island, and the very different quarrying just across the loch.

Very impressive identification - I doff my hat to you!

Scotland is certainly a lovely place. Sadly, I'm not at all familiar with the area. But I am looking forward rectifying my deficiency when I receive the prize for correctly identifying your photos, which I understand is an expense-paid vacation to the area in question! :)

Please tell us about the quarries...

And tell us about your trimaran...

    .

    Thanks for your interest, IN.

I'll put together some material about the quarries - there's some interesting stories and contrasts.

In the mean time, here's a picture of my little Solway Dory tri under sail in the Faery Isles on Loch Sween at Easter. The company (Dave and Dave) build sailing canoes in a very modest set up in the Lakes. They are regarded as the leading lights in sailing canoes in the uk. They have made a few trimarans, and this model, of which there are two, is the largest they have made.

And here's some film of the tri(s (and another sailing canoe)) from Solway Dory themselves:

Now, about that Scottish Tour... How about a bagpipe soundtrack? (Note how two pipers in a shed can render any number of annoying stringed instruments totally inaudible! :D)

Very nice sailing canoes. Looks like you had a splendid time sailing in a very scenic area.

Where were these photos taken, and why is this area so unusual?

You're getting very warm; it is one of the cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Which one is it, and what is unusual about it? It has to do with the milky water that the diver is "fishing" in.

That's a halocline. Judging by the depth of the fresh water, the cenote is well inland.

Warmer yet. It is deep, around 100'. And it is a halocline, sort of. Actually there are two haloclines, though you can only see the upper one in these photos. The lower one is just a few yards below this one. And strictly speaking this one isn't exactly a halocline (halo- meaning salt). If not salt, what chemical? (I suspect there is salt as well as this other chemical)
