    Dear All,

I have been entrusted with the task of preparing a proposal to have unified software for our group.

We need to compare and contrast the software available in the market and submit the optimum solution

BASIC SHIP DESIGN SOFTWARE – COVERING HYRDO STATICS, STABILITY, POWERING, CAPACITY CALCULATIONS
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS SOFTWARE- BASIC ONES(SHIP STRUCTURES) AND ADVANCED ONE( OFFSHORE) CAPABLE OF PERFORMING FEMA,FEA
    DRAFTING SOFTWARE: CAD
SHIP CONSTRUCTION SOFTWARE- FOR DETAILED STRUCTURAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS

THE ANALYSIS SHOULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE FOLLOWING FACTORS(WITH WEIGHTAGE GIVEN IN BRACKETS)

    COST ( 3 POINTS)
MULTI LOCATION, MULTI USER FACILITY(2 POINT)
COST OF MAINTENANCE AND UPGRADING( 2 POINTS)
USER FRIENDLINESS AND EASE OF TRAINING (2 POINTS)
DATA TRANSFER FACILITY( AMONG THESE SOFTWARE AND OTHER STANDARD SOFTWARE FOR DRAFTING AND MODELING ( 1 POINT)

So kindly advise me your valuable inputs to get the good understanding of the ship software application.

    Best Regards,
    Naval Arch AJ.

Hello Arjun, Napa has a good suite of tools for developing your initial hull requirements. Beyond the initial loft & other requirements you point out, NX has a ship design module with many nice parametric based ship design features. I have been using it for some time. It has CAD/CAM/CAE modules as well. With NX, I just import the splines for the hull from NAPA or another hull modeler (very fast), then apply surfaces to the splines in NX, thicken the sheets to form a solid (this forms both outer & inner mold line). From here you can add decks, bulkheads and many other features. All are 3D solids that can be assigned materials to help track assembly component weights. As larger ships can have a massive number of parts it's best to leverage NX tools like assembly filters (e.g. allows loading parts based on specified geometrical zones or specific part attributes).

Same general approach is used for aircraft & other lofted surface designs.

I would suggest contacting the various software vendors and request a quote based on your needs. Most software companies do product demos as well.

    Good luck.

That is true, NAPA is best software in this time for fairing surface hull(LINE) and calculate initial design.

It is safe to say that a certain program is the best. You need to know many programs, in depth, to say that. I know large shipyards, working with large boats, very complicated forms and none of them used NAPA to smooth forms. For them, I'm sure that NAPA is not the best.
On the other hand, please, what do you mean by "initial design"?. What is the best software in your opinion, to the "final design"?. I do not understand, the calculations to be done at the beginning or end of a design are the same. Aren´t they?

Yes, I mean here napa is used for basic design as well, many company are using it, one project is to designed and editted quickly with Class drawing package in napa or aveva as good as for hull designer.
Certainly I have used many program, to choose certain software depending on cost, plan of shipyard ,... Maybe no need napa, aveva, shipCon or other program, only using autocad we also designed certain vessel.
In my opinion now, napa is best and quick for basic design. And forward in the future I am not sure depend on everyone opinion.

I have used these programs: Foran, Defcar, MaxSurf, Catia, ARQN. The fact of having used does not mean that I know them in depth. I do not feel qualified to say that none of them is the best.
There is not a software on the market to make a "Class drawing package", as you say.
I know perfectly AutoCAD and I can assure you that, alone, can not do boat projects. Actually yes you could do but the calculations would be almost slower than making them by hand.
I do not know what will happen in the future but now, with all due respect, I do not think you're right in what you say. Maybe you should study more in-depth programs that you say have used.

I think that you have never used napa steel module and aveva marine or misunderstanding my meaning. Design compartment have used software for design Class drawing, napa steel module or aveva marine. We are working on it.

As I said before, I do not know NAPA nor AVEVA Marine.
I am sure I understand exactly what you mean.
    I said and I repeat:
    - Do not think anyone is qualified to say, as you said, that a particular program is "the best".
    - There is not a program that can create a "Class drawing package", as you affirm. What is obvious is that all the documentation to be submitted to the Classification Society may be prepared with computer programs.

So can you make design drawing to submit to the Class on which program?
And about us, we have performed all basic design, structure drawing, outfitting, piping system on software, and then export format .dwg to submit to Class.
I don't want to talk so much about this opinion. I said that this depend on personal opinion.
We have start job not same you.

I'm not sure that you know what you're talking about.
I think there is no program that serves to make all information to be send to a Classification Society. For example, as far as I know, no program has incorporated a module performing the calculation of the structure according to a classification society. There may be programs for direct calculation of structures but it is difficult that are integrated in one package for calculations of naval architecture.
There are also good programs to calculate, say, the hydrostatic but very badly drawn. Too often have large shipyards calculation packages and, in the end, made drawings with AutoCAD.
There are great programs for drawing piping, isometric, etc.. they have to be based on a 3D model created with an "independent" drawing module.
So the question you ask "make design drawing to submit to the Class on Which program" does not seem very wise. I, and I think everyone, use several programs.
By the way, if I were your boss, I wish you were not so long "working" with internet

I saw that you talk more and more then you don't know anything about napa and aveva which can quite make drawing, not do in autocad. Certainly after modeling in software, only use autocad for read .dwg event no need autocad.I think we should finish here. If you care training pls contact via email.

OK pdmsvn has been a pleasure to talk with you. I'm not going to e.mail you because, what for?. You just find out what I said in my first action : I do not know aveva marine, etc, and as you do not know the other programs, you should not, you can not, say what is the best because, even if it is your opinion, and you have a right to express your opinion, your opinion is not based on a, even light, knowledge of the current situation concerning software for shipbuilding.
    Goodbye, my friend

Which part of this sentence is said, "in my opinion"?.
The problem we have with what we write is that writing is and everyone can read it again.
