    Another day, another wreck!

This is the SS Palo Alto, a ferrocement tanker built during World War 1 to conserve steel for the war effort. The war ended before she was completed and the ship never entered service. Instead she was used as an amusement pier in Aptos CA until the hull began to break up and it was abandoned. Currently, the hull serves as an artificial reef and a bird sanctuary. More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Palo_Alto

I had hoped to paddle around the wreck and get more photos, but conditions were too rough to get around it. Instead I went out and played in the surf :D

Thanks for the leads folks, I'll look into them.

Great photos again. All the exposed bar in the second photo is really striking to look at.

    Nassua, Cook Islands.
The Tongan registered 'Manuvai', with coconut trees growing out of it. Apparently on the 28 December 1988, the first mate fell asleep drunk and the boat rammed the reef on autopilot. Before it was recovered a cyclone picked it up and deposited it in the trees forever.

Yeah, I'm resurrecting an old thread, but you guys might find this interesting...

This is from our California trip last year with video of some of the shipwrecks we paddled on.

I'm slowly working on book on Washington and Oregon shipwrecks you can visit with one on California wrecks to follow if the first one is successful. I plan to eventually do individual videos on most of the wrecks. eventually...

great video, looks like you may have found a good niche in the kayak book world. looks like a good bet, give people a reason to explore new areas in the sea kayaks. keep the pictures and now videos coming.

I'm moving towards doing wreck specific videos and this is sort of the prototype. The plan is to release the videos to promote the book, but since the book isn't done yet I figure I might as well start figuring out how to make the videos work.

This video is on the wrecks at Dupont WA which were sunk to form a breakwater. In addition to a bunch of old barges, there is the remains of the steam tug Wanderer, the four masted schooner William Nottingham and an as yet unidentified concrete ship.

very nice. the music is a nice touch. I would envision some proud dramatic or triumphant music when you are showing the historic pictures of the ships under sail, and than creepy music showing the wrecks of the same music.

I actually discovered some more information on the history of the Nottingham while looking for that picture of her for the video. The internet is a wonderful place! Still trying to put a name to the concrete one, though.

Choosing music is actually one of the hardest parts of producing the videos, especially now that I'm trying to not use copywrited songs. It's a matter of finding a piece that's the right length and the right feeling. I'm glad you liked it.

I'm sorting through pictures for the book and figured I'd post some from a wreck we paddled on earlies this year. This is (was?) the small freighter Helena Star, formerly the Fraternite. I don't know much on her history other than that she sat at Seattle for a long time, was eventually moved to the Hylebos waterway in Tacoma and sank. The state is planning on hauling her out and scrapping her, but they are waiting until salmon season is over to reduce the risk of environmental consequences.

A few of the transitory wrecks in Everett. The sailboat and the Midas were removed shortly thereafter, but the others remain.
