Which android phone app' for gps chartplotting in Australia?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 & I'm interested in downloading an application to enable accurate real time gps positioning on the ocean. I am in Australia.

I'm currently looking at AppBrain.com, they have software called NAVIONICS.

So who else has done this with their Android or iphone & can someone recommend a good app' for chart plotter use.

 

The Galaxy S2 is a telephone and performs quite well when you use it as such. The other on board gadgets are only toys.
My Garmin GPS-map, Navigon and even the nameless Chinese truck navigator perform much better than my Galaxy S2. They acquire faster, see more satellites and have better accuracy.

 

i have found apps for my s3 but no one has australian charts to suit. you have to scan charts and convert them which is over my head. i would happily pay for an aus chart download if anyone knows of one.

 

I concur. As a phone it does a superb job. I wasn't holding my breath for any good phone based software for marine purposes but it was worth asking.

 

Navionics, about $20
dont forget many of the 'charts' are made up drawings to get continuous charting as there has never been a survey to that scale which is why they all say dont use for navigation.
The downloads are also cut down packages compared with what you get on a dedicated plotter, same charts but lack of tools.

Bit of an update. I realized my phone came with the NAVIGON app' (made by Garmin) & it basically does what I wanted.

Very accurate for offshore use, displays speed & lat' & long' info' too. Not a chartplotter in that sense as it doesn't show reefs, depths ect but it tracks me accurately so in theory I will never lose my way when going offshore, even in fog, provided the satellite connection doesn't drop out. I have a compass onboard anyhow for that scenario.

I did notice though that once I'd launched the boat the other day it tracked me along a road that was next to the river, when I reached the end of that road, according to the GPS, it jumped out in to the river. All I do then is minimize the screen image as I go further out. Worked a treat.
